Obama blames the internet for unemployment.

OBAMA: One of the challenges in terms of rebuilding our economy is – businesses have gotten so efficient, that, uh, when was the last time somebody went to a bank teller? Instead of using an ATM. Or, used a travel agent instead of going online. A lot of jobs out that that used to require people now have become automated.

I can increasingly understand why Obama was only an adjunct night school lecturer at the U of Chicago, and even further appreciate why he was unable to write any journal articles of his own at Harvard. Obama is the Skipmeister, that student we all encountered in college who would blow off several weeks of class, then poorly sneak back in only to jump into the midst of detailed class discussions, volunteering the most inane, bizarre and uneducated constructs as if they were self-evident. Eventually the class would tire of their uneducated interruptions and start talking over them. I’m rather certain the thinking Americans are already there.
Please, Mr. President, if you’re not going to do the homework, if you’re not going to show up for class, but rather skip, hit the greens, vacation every other week, have parties with rappers, sports stars and Hollywood stars during week nights, fly out on “date nights” every working weekend, just don’t come to class anymore. Drop. It’s what you’re good at.
Those of us who attend class understand that it’s a little bit more complicated than this inane kindergartener explanation. Internet and distance-enabling technologies have helped facilitate a economic differential. You might have heard the term “outsourcing,” but there’s many aspects of it that are important to understand per the “jobs not returning” conjecture. Primarily, differentials in the regulatory landscape (e.g. all those things you make the evil jet owning CEOs impose upon their companies in the U.S., but look the other way on foreign operations) have a significant role in things. Of course, the earning differentials are a primary coefficient, where workforces globally are often less educated, can be employed in terrible working conditions without government alarm, lack pay, benefit and social service taxation overhead, and subsequently are cheaper to utilize for positions you can get by. Mix in distance-enabling and Fordist workforce models (where technology supplements a less educated and trained workforce) and you have the ingredients for a sustained job loss.
To use your words, government’s wee weed up things pretty bad and corporations have responded to the combination of incentives and disincentives to find an alternative. But back to my recommendation, we’re so far along in this economic depression that we really don’t need you to feel you should continue showing up. Make that vacation permanent. I’m pretty sure you still get all the lifelong salary goodies if you quit now, and that’s just more time for you to hang with the people you like. God knows how horrible it was riding in a disgusting bus, as much as they tried to make it hip for you, and encounter those awful middle class tea party folks.

What insight he possess…
8 yrs ago, I worked for a manufacturing company that made consumer goods. The company was forced to bring in more and more automation to remain cost competitive and because the work was mundane that workers were unwilling to do the work…even at union scale. The work needed to be done with great focus and attention to detail to get a quality product made.
These were realtively high paying jobs (with much overtime). Seasonal staff could work during the year and in three months make/save enough $$$ to live out the year on savings and unemployment…not well, but comfortable.
The point is these are jobs that more and more people were unwilling to do and do consistantly and reliably. So, the company brought in high tech equipment to do the job. Jobs that remained became more technical (more mechanics and more technicians to maintain the new equipment).

Still, his argument is a bit flawed, in that PEOPLE CAN’T AFFORD TO GO ON VACATIONS and so they aren’t using travel agents OR the internet. Unlike a certain chump who vacations every other week, at the expense of millions of taxpayer dollars to keep him safe. Then again, he’d call his vacationing creating or saving jobs.

I say that Clinton got lucky because of the Internet, and Cellphones, they made more work. A cellphone is huge, no wasted time traveling back to the office, and you make deals now on your cellphone on the road. Go to Wells or B of A and check the fees for a regular checking account vs. an online account (w/ATM banking) and see how much difference in cost there is. The banks obviously WANT you to do your banking electronically because they don’t want the overhead cost of employing actual people.
As noted above, many of us will soon pay a fee just to use our debit card. Wouldn’t want the banks profit margins impaired!

Also, I would like to know where to find these magical travel websites that manage to secure travel arrangements for individuals with absolutely no human interaction at all. That would be a true feat, for I believed these websites were run by people who did the legwork to accommodate the user as much as possible, and not by unicorn farts.
