All 53 Senate Democrats signed a letter tonight to House Speaker John Boehner saying essentially that they would rather the US default on its debt than pass the House GOP plan that would cut spending and force another vote next year.

Democrats would rather default on the debt they racked up than pass the Boehner plan.

The Caucus reported, via HotAir:

Fifty-three Democratic senators have signed a letter to House Speaker John A. Boehner saying they intend to vote against his plan for an increase in the debt ceiling, virtually assuring its defeat in the Senate even as the speaker lines up Republican votes to pass it in the House on Thursday.

Votes are not final until they are cast. But if the Democrats hold to their promise in the letter, Mr. Boehner’s plan for a six-month increase in borrowing authority will not make it to President Obama’s desk.

“We heard that in your caucus you said the Senate will support your bill,” the senators say in the letter. “We are writing to tell you that we will not support it, and give you the reasons why.”

In the letter, the senators argue that a short-term extension of the debt ceiling would “put America at risk” and “could be nearly as disastrous as a default.”

The speaker has been arguing publicly that he is confident that the Senate will pass his plan if the House approves it. Senate Democrats and President Obama have argued that the legislation cannot pass muster in the Democratic-controlled Senate.

  1. So now who is the Party of NO?

  2. So, that’s 53 morons who need to be tossed to the curb.

  3. From the party that has not had a budget for over 800 days….

re: Threatening to Default on US Debt

yep, i’d say that’s one heck of a bluff..

Just 6% believe that Congress is doing a good or an excellent
    job.
Forty-six percent (46%) now believe that most members of
    Congress are corrupt.

A Generic Republican continues to lead President Obama in an early
look at Election 2012. Republicans continue to lead Democrats on
    the Generic Congressional Ballot.

    ==

  5. Oh they have had a budget all right. The sky is the limit.

  6. And when are we taking to the streets?

  7. Please shut down the govt. I dare you, you morons will see how little we the people need you!

  8. This will hang around the heads of Claire McCaskill, and other red state democrat senators seeking reelection.

  9. They will be blamed for the default because they will not support anything the republicans pass in the house. This has been their plan all along to disregard what the American people want, which is to stop the wasteful spending.

  10. We’re not even asking them for meaningful cuts, and STILL they refuse to cooperate. If we don’t unite across party lines, hold the Democrats accountable for this crap, and force them to capitulate, we’re finished as a country. The time is now people.

  11. Stupid, spineless Boehner and the rest of the gutless GOP congressmen who followed him or proposed other useless plans should have stuck to CCB and called the Dem/regime’s bluff.

  12. What does Krauthammer say we do now then? lol He says we should pass the Boehner plan, so now that it is dead in the senate too does he think we should just capitulate further or what? lol

Lets go to the deadline and see what happens. Obama still has no plan!!!! Why is this all our responsibility? We passed a plan already in the House and the dems have done nothing!

  13. So they own the consequences. Fine with me.

  14. I think it’s time to roll the tanks into DC.

  15. What happens from now on belongs to the Dems. The GOP met them part way but still stuck to their guns regarding decreasing the deficit without increasing taxes. The Dems have no plan. This is all on them. If I were Boehner and the rest of the GOP, I just walk away and tell them to get back to the House when they have a plan. Then, they might talk again.

  16. Of course Dear Leader has no plan. He wants the weak members of the GOP to get all tangled up with stupid in-fighting and dopey plans. CCB is the only thing with teeth, and the congressmen of conscience who staunchly stood by the plan stood out in stark contrast. No wonder weak, toothless RINOs started spouting inanities at the Tea Party. Morons.

  17. I bought a magnetic bumper sticker that says, “Throw the Bums Out!”. Tomorrow it goes on the car to accompany the one that says, “Stop Spending!”. I knew it would come in handy. Depressing.

  19. Last ditch bluff. They think the GOP will fold like they did in 1994. They could be right but I hope not. That picture makes me kinda sick. Durbin with that self rightgeous glare playing chicken. A Chicago thug in a seat of power along with the other Chicago thug in the WH. You know, they are not even trying to hide it anymore. They want to bankrupt this country.

  20. GOP, walk away. THEY OWN IT.

  21. More likely WTF would role the tanks into small town America first.

Damn Dems want 4 more years of blank checks. So they can buy the ballot boxes. Gloves come off the day someone shows up at the front door demanding any more skin.

  22. In 1981, I took part in a college seminar that discussed the inevitable financial crisis that medicare and medicaid would cause. Anyone and everyone knew since their inception these programs would bankrupt the U.S.

The only way that anything will change is utter collapse; collapse will occur either now or later but it will occur because the craven political and bureaucratic class that runs this country refuses to give up their precious careers and powerful positions.

In the end, it won’t matter. The demographics favor the takers and the lawyer/politicians who service them in exchange for the benefits that they enact for themselves.
Just a matter of time, folks. We go quietly or not so quietly.

    Dear Leader IS the plan..

    ==

  24. It’s late. I’ll write to my congresscritters tomorrow. After all, the Democrats kept me from writing to John Boehner right away, they can wait.

  25. PS.. This liberal says, call them on it.

  26. Go John!!!

Walk away and let them own it.

    Period,

  27. Yup, call their bluff. They own the economy and they’ll all pay with their “jobs”.

  28. Pass it in the House and call the Senate’s bluff. The Senate will not put the country into default. If it does, Repubs’ Senate gains in the 2012 election will exceed expectations.

  29. What a surprise! The “tax and spend” Party bets that there are more mooches among the voting public than there are grown-ups. It’s time to find out if the people prefer fiscal irresponsibility with the inevitable near-future economic collapse or real government spending cuts which will give us the ability to salvage most of our safety net and essential services. Our only hope is replacing Obama and at least half of these 53 Democrat Dinosaurs with fiscal Conservatives.

  30. All 53 Senate Democrats signed a letter tonight to House Speaker John Boehner saying essentially that they would rather the US default on its debt than pass the House GOP plan that would cut spending and force another vote next year.

As much as the Boehner plan stinks, this is the Republicans’ golden opportunity to hang this whole debt ceiling debacle completely around the Democrats’ necks.

Are the Republicans up to it, or will they yet again prove they are deserving of the “Stupid Party” label?

  31. Yes, bg (#23), you’re right. Dear Leader is indeed the plan. The timer has been set.

And the stupid children of the GOP squabble on.

  32. The Demorats are once again trying to misdirect their incompetance as coming from the Republicans. The Dems were never going to accept any Republican plan. The Republicans need to tell the Dems to take their letter and put it in a place where the sun never shines, up their sorry butts.

  33. The main thing is that House Republicans will have passed two separate debt ceiling hikes, the Senate has passed none, and Obama has proposed none (other than claiming the land would be covered in rainbows and unicorns if his plan passes, but you have to pass it to find out what’s in it).

Whatever the final form of the Boehner bill, once it passes he needs to announce this is the most the House will consider, and note that there are no plans on the table except the two the House has passed. The ball must be put in the Democrats’ court.

  34. The gauntlet has been laid done.

My bet is that Boehner and the RINO’s will use their Vichy French strategy once again.

Is it too much to ask for a Republican leadership as tough minded as the Dhimmies?

  35. This should be quiet a seen here for next few days as the congress claw each other. Hopefuly Bahner can overcome.

  36. Let’s face it, Obama and Reid have the Republicans right where they want them.

No balls or backbone, the GOP is going to roll over again – what a bunch of cockroaches, scurrying around trying to make ‘deals’ instead of holding onto principles. The Dems have every intention of spending America into bankruptcy – and they’re not going to let 2 or 3 GOP sissies stop them. Boehner is going to get boned – and the propaganda machine (MSM) of the liberal progressives are going to make sure of it.

  37. We need more conservative republicans

  38. Why the sound of me getting rich.

You can always count on democrats to do the wrong

Thing. Too easy tomake money. A crash has never

Been so welcome , for those that have prepared.

Bring it on. Yew haw! Powder is dry

  39. Rancid, I for one want the Republicans to send up the plan and walk away and then demand the Democrats CBO rated plan.

The Democrats are severly miscaculating that they can get a redo of the government shut down of old.
People are still livid over them not having a budget for the past three years and ramming through Obamacare against the overwhelming majority of the people (ignore skewed pols that said otherwise).
That coupled with the fact that their media monopoly is now defunct, they won’t be able to go into the ” tell a lie often enough and it becomes truth” mode.

There is already an investigation into collusion between the Obama administration and S&P over intentional and premature, public rating downgrade gambit. The people no longer trust the government and most, but not all of that is from what we have seen over the last three years.

  40. wtf??

so the house passes CCB, idiot harry won’t even bring it up for a vote… NOTE TO MEDIA: it wasnt voted down, it wasn’t even brought up for a vote!

now boehner passes this new item which contains many of the items agreed upon by the illustrious gang of 6, but it has actual cuts, etc.

and the senate dems, what the hell have the actually passed? They sure have time to sign some stinkin letter, the haven’t passes a single thing! I expect this nonsense from Harry reid and chucky schummer, what about people like Tester, Nelson from NE, Warner of VA, Nelson of FL….. I used to think at least they were moderate dems, somewhat conservative, hell they aren’t even that.

The entire undemocratic party has gone down the toilet, no plan, nothing, they say they have a plan “over 10 years”, why they hell should anyone believe a word they say when they haven’t even passed a budget in the last 3 years!

  41. Congress should do its job: make a budget with lots of cuts. Then it is up to the Senate and President to sign it or not – and own it.

  42. I never thought ion all my life there would be ANY 53 Democrats I would agree with ON ANYTHING, much less ALL SENATORS.

But I sure do on this Boehner plan.

    FOR OPPOSITE REASONS.

I don’t agree with a debt ceiling HIKE and it hasn’t BEGUN to have enough spending slashes.

But I’d rather see default than RINO ENABLING, even if the enabling is only half of what they really want.

I want to see Depts close, Agencies dismantled, salaries slashed, SEIU and ACORN dismantled, Marxist Policies boiled out of the system like dross from the foundries’ pots. I want to see Green subsidies and foreign aid to dictators decimated.
I want to see the embezzlers charged with felonies.
Cut the Depts of Education and Interior and Homeland Security. Dismantle EPA, NEA/NPR/PBS, anything spent on the UN, FEMA dismantled, FCC dismantled…
Lands held by the Interior Dept released to Private CIVILIAN CITIZENS. To TAXPAYING lower Middle Class who know what to do with it, and to such under that who AGREE TO BE TAUGHT AND TRAINED by PRIVATE sources who know how to do things properly for their families’ best interests and taking care of land management, properly. NOT for the drunken “entitlement”-minded buffoons. NOT for ILLEGAL ALIENS and/or ANCHOR BABIES who are also illegal and immorally IN this nation IMPROPERLY.

  43. I love gubmnt shut downs. The world is better off

Without the leaches, we can govern ourselves

accordingly. No nanny needed. Power is dry.

Bring on the shut down, please!

  44. Was that their resignation letter? I don’t see a plan submitted by any of these 53. An open declaration to oppose, obstruct, block and deny the only plans offered?

I’ll be calling Tom Harkin’s office today and will encourage my Iowa friends to call him too to press on this issue of resignation. It’s actually time for them to resign. The people of the United States gave an overwhelming mandate to reduce the size of government in 2010. The polling now confirms it’s even stronger, with approximately three quarters demanding a constitutional amendment requiring a balanced budget, as well as a percentage well larger than the actual percentage of citizens who pay net taxes, demanding lower taxes.

When the Democrats overtly obstruct and block the will of the people, we no longer have a representative democracy. We have tyranny. Rather than lead us down the path to rebellion, which is the inevitable consequence when an unaccountable and irresponsible government becomes fully disconnected with the people, we can have the “revolution” prescribed for in our constitution. Resign, Senators. Resign, Obama. You’ve failed the people and the urgency of the times require a capable government who is responsive and representative of the democratic will.

  45. i picked this up yesterday on free republic….and it bears repeating. all of our congresscritters need to be on notice and i mean all. they have the advantage of knowing that once elected removing them takes time – given that we’re not a banana republic YET. beware of wolves in sheep clothing.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SGyVNippvA&feature=youtu.be

  46. Shows the priorities, doesn’t it? To the Party of Marx, it’s more important to keep spending taxpayers’ money than resolve the debt crisis.

  47. So the world takes away our credit cards- so what. We can get them back after we demonstrate some responsibility and pay down our existing debt. A year of pain now and we could be much stronger as a nation in the future.

  48. Democrat Senators.
Despicable, worthless, both un and anti-American
    and totally beyond any shame.
    But I repeat myself.

  49. Bring it on. I have ceased to care.

  50. The Dems are not stupid…reckless, untrustworthy and dangerous, but not stupid. They know passing nothing kills them. Obama knows that, too.

This is a bluff. They forced idiot Boehner to water down his plans to the point they will sign it if it gets to them. They HAVE to sign it. They just knew all they had to do is apply light pressure and Boehner would continue to “compromise” his plans and make them more suitable to their needs. They were right.

Now, once the plan passes, it will be “the Republican’s plan” and any bad spin the Media cares to put out will land squarely on Boehner and the House. Obama will say he and the Senate were “forced” by the House “terrorists” (note well how that meme is already out there); that it was the Republicans who held the gun to America’s head because – after all – Obama and the Senate never had a plan…which was the plan all along.

    And it’s worked brilliantly.

Obama may well get a 2nd term out of this and Boehner will have handed it to him and f*cked his own voters to do it. Watch and see.

  51. HAD Boehner listened to the patriots around him and just walked away and shut up after sending over CCB, the next elections would be a lock for conservatives. Not now…the media will now be able to place all blame on the Republicans.

And on the off chance the Senate and Obama do refuse to sign Boehner’s final plan, the Media will AGAIN be able to blame it all on the Republicans. Obama wins again.

If only Boehner had walked away after CCB…but now we’ll never know.

  52. Well you gotta give Senate Democrats points for balls. No budget from them for almost 3 years and they actually have the nerve to talk publicly about being responsible?

Lol, I am REALLY starting to dislike these people. It’s like a cluster-douche.

  53. Newsflash, folks: there will be no default. Obama has been lying through his teeth about this. Monthly tax revenue: $200 billion. Monthly interest payment: $29 billion. Interest payment, social security, Medicare, Medicaid, veterans benefits, and military salaries all add up to $134 billion per month.

That leaves $66 billion to spend on war funding and bureaucrat skeleton crews. And good! I want to see the biggest layoff of government workers in history!

  54. once again the democratic party is in opposition to the will of the majority of the american people. could wasserman-schultz tell me again who wants to have a dictatorship in america.

  55. The debt ceiling is a fabrication just like our currency. How many “defaults” by foreign governments have the US bailed out with restructured loans and in the past 100 years? This is all designed to keep the Fed in business.

  56. The cuts are not even a rounding error

$22 billion 2012 “cuts” per the revised Bill
    $3.8 TRILLION 2011 spending

  57. “all”? You mean Bernie Sanders and Republican Scott Brown.

  58. Democrats would rather force the country’s economy into chaos than allow Republicans to win.

That’s pretty screwed up thinking. When politics is more important than the economic survival of the country, it’s time to replace the politicians.

  59. I say stay firm Boehner and the House Republicans. The Democrats now own this mess with NO COMPROMISE. The Republicans did their job. It is time for the Democrats to do theirs. No plans or budget. Just bash bash bash the Republicans. Well, that is not working this time. The country sees what is happening. HOLD FAST REPUBLICANS. It is now in their hand. DO NOT FOLD. CALL THEIR BLUFF.

    * * *

Are you serious? The only time the Republicans did their job was when they sent over CCB. Since then they’ve been doing Obama’s job by dividing the Republicans in the House and alienating the very people who would likely vote for them next time around. THAT was the plan Obama never would detail, and it’s working perfectly. Almost as if Boehner is in on it.

  61. And the Democrats do NOT own this mess in the mind of the stupid majority of Americans. I read that the Media is blaming Republicans 3 to 1 for this (no surprise there) but now the CINOs have ALSO pissed off their base.

    Obama just cannot lose.

  62. In the letter, the senators argue that a short-term extension of the debt ceiling would “put America at risk” and “could be nearly as disastrous as a default.”

Well, if the short-term extension is only “nearly” as disastrous as the default, why would the Democrats choose the MORE disastrous default option?

Because they are un-American sociailist @ssh@les, that is why.

  63. Democrats, always the patriot …. Their plot line is right out of the movie Animal Farm. Yeah I watched it this weekend, might explain their world view for you,

  64. Both sides are playing a dangerous game of chicken for political advantage. Everyone is going to lose.

  65. Now we find out that the new Boehner plan only cuts a few billions the first year when we need cuts of trillions. Any cuts promised past one year are only empty promises that Congress never keeps. (They never have and never will!)
You don’t have my ass in line Mr. Boehner. You may get some independents but you will lose the base when the truth of your smoke and mirrors plan gets out. And you can bet the friendly media will get it out!
I am tired of the Democrats and Republicans playing “good cop, bad cop” while the country goes to hell.

  66. Ah Claire McCaskell, you have just added a ton more folks to the list of “disenfranchised” seniors to those who will vote against you in Missouri. Thank you for more “fodder” to wake up those seniors who you have duped for all these years. Just can’t thank you enough.

  67. It is time to write a bill that removes the Balanced Budget Amendment vote , raises taxes on General Electric, and cuts spending by an even larger amount than the current proposal. The threat to default is a threat for the big gobvernment spenders to committ suicide. Shutting government hurts most the very people who are the problem. Its a bluff that should be called every time.

  68. @#22 Mike

Amen. Though, I didn’t need to take a college seminar to figure it out.

  69. It’s my understanding that during the Reagan years, the debt ceiling was adjusted 18 times. I haven’t verified this, just heard a sound bite from Charles Krauthammer talking about it and saying that “apparently no one in the White House” can divide 8 by 18. That looks to me like at least 2x a year the debt ceiling was changed. So all this fear mongering from the WH and the Dems about how the GOP is being reckless by only giving a 6 month extension is BS. Why isn’t anyone in the GOP pointing this out? Why are we playing Charlie Brown to their Lucy, yet again?

  70. Does this mean that voting has consequences or are we still electing American Idols?
I guess we have run out of other peoples money, this will be a real learning experience for many on the fence independents. If they can figure it out……………

  71. It seems to me that the Democrats have figured a way to make Republicans take responsibility no matter what! They are screaming a deal must be made but they are doing nothing. The Republicans are bidding against themselves! If this Boehner bill passes, Reid can make the changes they want and dare the Republicans to deny it (and take the blame for govt shutdown).

only in a Democrat-controlled Senate does reasoning lead to choosing the worse of two options and then blaming the Republicans for the result.
