Crowds flocked to see the troops return from war in Edinburgh.
It was wonderful parade complete with bagpipes.
It was an emotional scene… Welcome home!

The battlegroup lost 30 soldiers in Afghanistan.
The BBC reported:

Hundreds of soldiers from the 3 Rifles and 1 Scots have marched in Edinburgh after returning from Afghanistan.

They were taking part in a homecoming parade on the Royal Mile to thank the public for their support, before being presented with their service medals.

The Edinburgh-based troops were deployed to Helmand in October 2009.

During the six-month tour the 1,400-strong battlegroup lost 30 members, the biggest loss of life in a battlegroup for 60 years.

It Has Always Been The Soldier

    It is the soldier,
not the President who gives us democracy.

    It is the soldier,
not the Congress who takes care of us.

    It is the soldier,
not the Reporter who has given us Freedom of Press.

    It is the soldier,
not the Poet who has given us Freedom of Speech.

    It is the soldier,
not the campus [community] Organizer who
has given us the Freedom to Demonstrate.

    It is the soldier,
    who salutes the flag;
    who serves beneath the flag,
and whose coffin is draped by the flag,
that allows the protester to burn the flag.

God Bless Soldiers everywhere for putting THEIR
lives on the line to protect us ALL from terrorism!

  7. I learned this story at a Celtic festival yesterday where my Scottish Country Dance group performed:

Some members of the The Black Watch, 3rd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland, created a Scottish country dance while they were in Afghanistan. They called it “The Duke of Rothesay’s Kandahar Reel.” The Duke is Prince Charles, who is the Royal Colonel of the regiment. Here’s the story.
    http://www.army.mod.uk/news/19266.aspx

From the article: “The energetic reel reflects the teamwork required to run and support the battle group in its aviation assault role.”

These soldiers are not the first to create such a dance. Some Scottish prisoners of war in Germany in WWII devised one, now called “The Reel of the 51st Division.” You can see it here:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9dK5eeSmU4

The Germans were suspicious, thinking it was some kind of code. It was, in a way, a private code: the dance’s figures form the two arms of the St. Andrews Cross, which is on the Scottish flag. (My reaction to this story, as the wife of a Vietnam War POW, is that the Germans treated their prisoners a whole lot better than the North Vietnamese did.)

  8. Thanks for the help boys.
    God bless you.

  9. Judy, I just finished reading The Passing of the Night two days ago. The North Vietnamese were ruthless, one incident was giving Risner a letter from his wife on XMAS telling him that his mother had passed away that they had held until they could maximize the pain. We should have tried Kerry and Fonda for treason.

  10. “for the cause of freedom.”

    If only that were True.

  11. Nightfighter, you are right. My husband was headed for certain death, but fortunately Ho Chi Minh died and all torture stopped. Most people don’t realize Ho was personally responsible for the torture. The bad treatment continued, but not torture, after he died.

  12. bg, that poem bears repeating.

Many thanks to all brave soldiers serving the cause of freedom.

  13. Awesome!
    GOD bless our TROOPS!

  14. Judy, I believe that being captured by the Jihadist today would compare with the Ho Chi Minhs. I was stationed at NKP where there was a tower clock named for Uncle Ho. This Thai province had been invaded by refugees escaping from Communism but were loyal to their homeland and sent millions of dollars to Hanoi that the GIs spent. It is very similar to the crisis we have with our illegals, except that the Thais roped off a small area where the N.Viets could settle. McCain & Kerry forsake our POWs held in Laos just as FDR had in WWII when he let the Russians that liberated them send them to Siberia. As vicious as the Germans were, they probably treated POWs better than any other conflict we have engaged in. My dad once told me that during a period while in Italy, neither side took prisoners, they were cumbersome and lack of resources to care for them. Tell your husband that he is much revered to have endured those years and the ones since, what courage.

  15. In 2005, I vacationed in Scotland and saw firsthand how the Scots honor and revere their warriors. Thanks for posting this, Jim. We should feel blessed to have such partners in this war.

  16. “Greet them ever with grareful hearts.”

This Mother’s Day, Mother had her son home.

Last Mother’s Day, Mother had a email attachment picture of her son in front of his up-armored Humvee with a big smile and a bouquet of Afghan poppies; and an admonition not to show the pic to anyone.

Happy Mother’s Day to all, especially to our wonderful military Moms!

  17. God Bless the Scots.

  18. The song they are playing is “Scottish Soldier”.

They are hard men. Thanks for posting such a rousing video of our allies, Jim.

The Scots are are the finest people on earth, and responsible in so many ways for the founding of America, its economic wealth, and indeed the invention of the modern world.

When England was only letting Lords into their esteemed universities, the Scots opened their universities to everyone, including women, and were truly a fully literate society long before the rest of Europe.

Adam Smith (“Wealth of Nations”) is just one result of this society.

    God Bless the Scots!

    .

  19. Thank you, nightfighter, I’ll pass on your comment. About being captured by jihadists, I’d say the two are comparable, but not identical. Jihadists are more concerned with immediate effect — that is, terrorizing the rest of the world by their barbaric and horrifying treatment of enemies. The communists were more strategic — they wanted the POWs to confess that they were war criminals, so their statements could be used for propaganda purposes. (The Germans just wanted to keep the enemy soldiers out of the war, I think.)

And a comment back on topic — the Scots are very left-wing in general, heavily dependent on government and politically correct to a fault. It is therefore very cheering to see this display of support for their military men, and also to recognize that the royal family is so heavily involved in the military.

  20. Saw it on BBC when I was in London during the past 4 days.

People cheered on them left and right along the street. Was great to watch.

Met a US WW2 vet in Paddington at the Heathrow Express. Thanked him, which did surprise him (don’t think many Austrians or Germans do that with US vets.)

Also saw the parts of the UK that are going down the sewer. “Halal food”. Arab writings on every second shop on my way to Paddington station earlier today. Lots and lots of veiled women.

Also saw some human rights wench on the BBC whine about the election. But about the oppressed women she had nothing to say.

  21. Welcome home, brave ones!!

Blessings to our troops this Mother’s Day!
