A terrifying collision at Citi Field Thursday night left New York Mets first baseman Jared Young motionless in the dirt. Then the city’s emergency crews turned a medical emergency into a viral embarrassment.

The terrifying incident occurred in the sixth inning when Mets pitcher Nolan McLean raced toward first base to field a slow ground ball. As McLean attempted to cover the bag, his knee slammed into Young’s head, sending the 31-year-old player face-first onto the dirt.

Young lay motionless as teammates, trainers, and medical personnel rushed to his aid. He was eventually placed on a stretcher and taken from the field while giving a thumbs-up to the crowd.

A hospital CT scan came back negative. Green said Young still had “real concussion symptoms” but full use of his extremities and had “avoided the scariest outcomes.”

That should have been the end of the story. It wasn’t.

But video of the response quickly sparked outrage online, with viewers questioning the apparent confusion and difficulty involved in removing the injured player from the field.

“As a paramedic, this is tough to watch,” one wrote. “You’d think the Mets could spring the bill for an electric Striker cot, but still no excuse for the sloppiness from that crew.”

Another wrote: “As a paramedic — this was the most painful part of this entire accident. Like the three stooges out there.”

Another user asked, “Am I tweaking or did the Mets EMS team botch this?”

Another user wrote, “I’m a nurse. Part of my job description dictates that I be able to lift 50 pounds. It’s literally in my contract. They need better fitness to be lifting stretchers. Goodness.”
