Democrat Rep. Eric Swalwell appeared on CNN’s “News Central” on September 29, 2025, where he discussed potential actions by Democrats if they regain control of Congress.
During the interview with host Kate Bolduan, Swalwell stated that House Democrats plan to target private citizens who have worked with the Trump administration.
He framed these comments in the context of the recent indictment of former FBI Director James Comey on charges of lying to Congress and obstruction. Swalwell expressed hope that the Comey indictment would deter individuals from engaging in what he called “one-offs” or deals with President Trump.
The California congressman emphasized that Democrats intend to enter the majority in Congress a year from then, signaling that “accountability is coming.”
Swalwell argued that the timing of Comey’s indictment under the Trump administration raises questions about political motivations, noting it occurred while Trump was previously in office.
His remarks were prompted by recent settlements in lawsuits filed by Trump against media outlets like CBS and ABC over alleged defamation and editing issues.
Swalwell’s statements have been interpreted as a vow to weaponize government against Trump allies if Democrats regain power.
He specifically mentioned that Democrats would investigate and target those involved in so called deals with the president.
