Biden Super Bowl Interview Brinksmanship; Fox Caves to White House Demand for Softball ‘Fox Soul’ Streaming Hosts Q&A Instead of Fox News

The White House initially said Friday the traditional presidential Super Bowl interview would not take place this weekend. A statement by White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre blamed Fox Corp. which is broadcasting the Super Bowl LVII between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. Jean-Pierre said that Fox Corp. rejected Biden’s demand to be interviewed by the Fox Soul streaming service to reach out to African-Americans.

An announcement was made by Fox Corp. Friday afternoon that Fox Soul would do the Super Bowl interview with Biden.

According to the CIVIQS daily tracking poll of registered voters, African-Americans are the only racial/ethnic group that gives Biden support over 50 percent. Friday’s poll shows Black voters’ approval of Biden at 72 percent, White approval at 32 percent and Hispanic/Latino at 42 percent. Biden’s overall approval in the CIVIQS poll is 38 percent.

Jean-Pierre had tweeted before noon EST:

“The President was looking forward to an interview with Fox Soul to discuss the Super Bowl, the State of the Union, and critical issues impacting the everyday lives of Black Americans. We’ve been informed that Fox Corp has asked for the interview to be cancelled.”

Excerpt from Wikipedia about Fox Soul:

“FOX Soul is a digital television network and live streaming service operated by FOX Television Stations that launched on January 13, 2020. Featuring original and syndicated programs including The Sharpton Sisters, Brutally Honest with Jasmine Brand, Crockett’s Corner, Cocktails with Queens , The Book of Sean and The Business of Being Black with Tammi Mac, FOX Soul presents content that pertains to the African-American experience. The network also includes programs about the achievements of past and present African-Americans, for instance The Uprising.[1] FOX Soul is the first streaming service launched by Fox Corporation.[2]”

The Hollywood Reporter reported the cave by Fox Corp to Biden (excerpt):

President Biden will sit for a Super Bowl Sunday interview with Fox Soul, Fox Corp. said Friday.

“After the White House reached out to Fox Soul Thursday evening, there was some initial confusion,” The company said in a statement. “Fox Soul looks forward to interviewing the President for Super Bowl Sunday.”

The decision caps off a confusing few hours, with the White House saying that it had booked an interview with Fox Soul hosts Vivica A. Fox and Mike Hill, only to have Fox Corp. cancel the interview.

CNN’s Oliver Darcy thought Biden was playing games with Fox, “I don’t understand why the White House is playing this game. Of course Fox Corp is not going to let them bypass Fox News for an interview with Fox Soul, a small streaming operation with a tiny audience. Why not just say that they’re declining the Fox News interview & outline why?”

NPR’s Edgar Deggans sees the move as “masterful”

“Masterful move by Biden, arranging a Super Bowl interview w/Black-focused Fox Soul, sidestepping Fox News Channel (bet he’s frosty over hammering of son Hunter Biden). Owner News Corp. canceled the interview, realized how bad THAT looked and relented.”
