House Dems Introduce Legislation That Would Lower Voting Age to 16

A new joint piece of legislation introduced by Democrat Rep. Grace Meng of New York aims to lower the voting age from 18 to 16.

H.J.Res.16 states, “The right of citizens of the United States, who are sixteen years of age or older, to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of age.”

The bill also declares ‘The twenty-sixth article of amendment to the Constitution of the United States would be repealed’ if the joint resolution was signed into law.

Notably, the 26th amendment in the Constitution states no one under the age of 18 is allowed to vote.

The Joint House Resolution has 12 cosponsor which includes Rep. Alexandria-Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib,Sean Casten, Lori Trahan , Suzanne Bonamici,  Earl Blumenauer, Jamaal Bowman,  Barbara Lee, Seth Moulton, Adriano Espaillat, Jan Schakowsky and Ayanna Pressley.

In 2019, Nancy Pelosi told the Daily Caller, “I myself have always been for lowering the voting age to 16… I think it’s really important to capture kids when they’re in high school.”

The entire Joint Resolution is below:

While Americans are facing financial pressures due to record high inflation, lawmakers should let kids focus on their class president and lawmakers should start passing legislation that helps the ongoing economic crisis.
