Joe Biden’s bicycle is equipped with “toe cages” installed on the pedals. The front portion of your foot is inserted into this cage.
They allow one leg to lift up on a pedal while the other leg is pushing down. It is especially helpful for climbing hills. When you stop, you must move EACH foot backwards 4-5” to get your shoe out of the cage, then put your foot on the ground.
When Biden came to a stop he removed his left foot from the cage and on the ground. His right foot tries to just step off the pedal, forgetting it was in the cage and stays locked on the pedal. He tilts to the right and then falls all the way over to the ground.
Having the elderly use “toe cages” is absolutely foolish. It’s an unnatural act for them to move their foot far backwards before stepping down. The side fall is also a great way to break their fragile hips. The only possible reason the Secret Service allows Biden to use “toe cages” is to prevent embarrassment. The press often rides with Biden.
Without the toe cages, Biden would likely have trouble climbing even moderate inclines with his frail legs. The cages allow him to use pedal power from both legs at the same time.
