London Mayor Gets Into Tiff With Trump; President Destroys Him

The mayor of London isn’t a fan of President Trump, and Trump doesn’t much like the mayor, either.

The two have tangled for the last few years and, over the weekend, did so gain. As usual, Trump came away the big winner.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan resparked his feud with Trump by mocking him for canceling a weekend trip to Poland in which foreign leaders commemorated the start of World War II. Trump announced Thursday that he would stay in the United States to monitor Hurricane Dorian as it bears down on the United States. In his place, Trump sent Vice President Mike Pence.

“He’s clearly busy dealing with a hurricane out on the golf course,” Khan, who did attend the event, told Politico’s London Playbook.

With the hurricane still days away from landfall, Trump played golf at his resort outside of Washington, D.C. He also attended briefings on the hurricane and continued to warn Americans in the path of the storm to take the hurricane seriously.

On Tuesday, Trump slapped back at Khan.

“The incompetent Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, was bothered that I played a very fast round of golf yesterday. Many Pols exercise for hours, or travel for weeks. Me, I run through one of my courses (very inexpensive). President Obama would fly to Hawaii. Kahn should focus on […] ‘knife crime,’ which is totally out of control in London. People are afraid to even walk the streets. He is a terrible mayor who should stay out of our business!” Trump wrote on Twitter.

Khan also said Trump embraces racists. “These people have been inspired by mainstream politicians who subscribe to their point of view,” Khan said. Trump “is a guy who amplifies racist tweets; amplifies the tweets of fascists; says things that are deeply objectionable. If I don’t stand up and call that out I think I’m doing a disservice to Londoners who chose me as their mayor.”

Trump and Khan have feuded since 2016, when Trump proposed banning Muslims from traveling to America from seven countries in the Middle East. Khan, London’s first Muslim mayor, called Trump “ignorant.”

In June, when Trump took an official state visit to the United Kingdom, he hit back, calling Khan a “stone cold loser.” Trump said Khan “by all accounts has done a terrible job as Mayor of London, has been foolishly ‘nasty’ to the visiting President of the United States, by far the most important ally of the United Kingdom. He is a stone cold loser who should focus on crime in London, not me.”

At a press conference with departing Prime Minister Theresa May, Trump should shut it. “I don’t think he should be criticizing a representative of the United States that can do so much good for the United Kingdom,” Trump told reporters. “He’s a negative force, not a positive force.”
