To hear the Democrats tell it, President Trump likes to put children in cages.
“I’ll never forget this, because it was the moment I saw with my own eyes that the America I love was becoming a nation that steals refugee children from their parents,& caged them,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wrote on Tuesday as she posted pictures about her visit last year to Tornillo, Texas, to view a housing center for foreigners who entered the U.S. illegally (it was all staged, of course, as The Gateway Pundit reported on Wednesday.)
But former president Barack Obama’s immigration chief this week said it was actually Obama and his administration that set up the so-called cages to house illegals.
“I’ve been to that facility, where they talk about cages. That facility was built under President Obama under [Homeland Security] Secretary Jeh Johnson. I was there because I was there when it was built,” said Thomas Homan, who served as Obama’s executive associate director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for about four years.
At a conference hosted by the Center for Immigration Studies, Honan referenced one time when a Democratic chairman at a congressional hearing asked a Trump official, “You still keeping kids in cages?”
“I would answer the question, ‘The kids are being house in the same facility built under the Obama administration,’ ” Homan said. “If you want to call them cages, call them cages. But if the left wants to call them cages and the Democrats want to call them cages then they have to accept the fact that they were built and funded in FY 2015.”
Homan also said that the design is more about “protecting children.”
Facilities at the border “were not built to take care of children,” he said, noting that “it’s chain link dividers that keeps children separate from unrelated adults. It’s about protecting children.”
The idea that Trump and his administration keeps children in cages was bolstered by a Twitter post in 2018.
This is what happens when a government believes people are “illegal.”

But as fact-checker website Snopes pointed out, was snapped during a protest staged in front of Dallas City Hall to call attention to the Trump administration’s practice of separating families and confining undocumented children. Different photographs of the event document that the same child was standing a mocked-up ‘cage’ open at the top, and several commenters noted that the boy was crying not because he was confined, but because he saw his mother outside the pen and could not immediately figure out how to get to her.”
Earlier this month, Homan said that deporting illegal aliens with final orders is effective.
“I’ve said many times, there are over 100,000 family units with final orders, been ordered removed by an immigration judge,” Homan told Fox News. “We need to seek them out and return them to their homeland. We need to execute the final orders issued by the judges, or there’s no integrity to the entire system. That’s not being done; we need to do it. I did it four years ago and it worked. I can’t understand why that’s not happening.”
Homan also told a House Appropriations subcommittee in 2017 that “it isn’t the fault of law enforcement that people get separated. It’s the fault of the perpetrator. ”
“If someone enters this country illegally and knows he’s in the country illegally and is found to be in the country illegally and is ordered removed from the country and chooses to have a child in this country that’s a U.S. citizen by virtue of birth, he put himself in that position, so ICE is not separating that family,” he said.
Unlike other agencies, we do this despite a constant deluge of biased attacks against ICE personnel by those who disagree with the laws we enforce. While I recognize that people have the right to protest laws they don’t agree with I want to emphasize to the public and to the media and to this committee that ice officers don’t write the laws. They enforce the laws,” he said. “Those who choose to enter this country illegally which is a crime, a federal crime, or to overstay their visa have knowingly chosen to break the law.”
