GOOD GUY: Trump Called Jerrold Nadler In Hospital After Hater’s Medical Emergency: Report

President Trump can be brutal to his adversaries, but he can also be kind.

After Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) was briefly hospitalized in Manhattan in May, Trump made a surprise get-well call to him, Yahoo News reported.

On May 24, Nadler — who as chairman of the House Judiciary Committee has been urging impeachment of the president — was attending an event in Manhattan when he grew woozy, slumping forward in his chair. Nadler, 71, was worked on by medical technicians and then taken to Lenox Hill Hospital, where he was held overnight.

Nadler’s staff said later that the lawmaker suffered from dehydration and he did not have any serious medical issues. Taking him to the hospital “was just a precaution,” one Nadler staffer told Yahoo News.

While Nadler was in the hospital, Trump called. And while Nadler has called for impeachment, the animosity was “put aside at least momentarily, in favor of more human considerations, according to several people familiar with the contents of the call,” Yahoo reported. “A member of Nadler’s staff who would only speak on the condition of anonymity said Trump called Nadler from Air Force One as he was on his way to Japan.”

Trump, a New Yorker, has battled Nadler for decades, all the way back to the 1980s, when Trump, a real estate developer, sought approval for a major project on the West Side of Manhattan, which Nadler represents.

Trump now told Nadler that he had seen him on television, and that he thought Nadler was “tough.” Trump repeated that assessment several times, adding that he wished the congressman well and wanted to know if he could do anything more. The two men did not discuss politics or impeachment, according to a person familiar with the call.

The White House declined to comment on the record, but the seeming warmth of the conversation — however brief — contrasts sharply with what Trump has said of Nadler previously. In a meeting with Republicans this spring, Trump reportedly called Nadler, who underwent weight-loss surgery years ago, “Fat Jerry.”

Trump had referenced Nadler in nearly 20 tweets in the months before Nadler’s medical scare, but has not mentioned him in his Twitter messages since. Any good feeling between the two antagonists, however, is likely to be short-lived, as the House Judiciary Committee continues to pursue Trump. On Monday, the Nadler-led committee will hold a hearing titled “Lessons From the Mueller Report: Presidential Obstruction and Other Crimes,” and will call on Watergate defendant John Dean, whose testimony was crucial to the eventual resignation of President Richard Nixon.
