BREAKING: Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin Formally Rejects Dem Request For Trump’s Tax Returns

Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin on Monday formally rejected House Democrats’ request for President Trump’s tax returns.

Mnuchin told House Ways and Means Chairman Richard Neal (D-MA) in a letter that his committee’s request for Trump’s tax returns “lacks a legitimate legislative purpose.”

“Out of respect for the deadlines previously set by the Committee, and consistent with our commitment to a prompt response, I am informing you now that the Department may not lawfully fulfill the Committee’s request,” Mnuchin said, citing legal guidance from the Department of Justice.

Read the letter from Mnuchin to Dem Rep. Neal:

A couple weeks ago the Treasury Department on missed a second Democrat deadline to provide President Trump’s tax returns.

Mnuchin said the department should provide the House Ways and Means Committee with a decision by May 6th — and he formally rejected the Democrats Monday.

The Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, Rep. Richard Neal (D-MA), sent a letter to the IRS last month demanding President Trump’s tax returns for 2013 through 2018 as well as for several of Trump’s businesses.

“We’re under audit,” Trump told reporters last month. “Despite what people said and we’re working that out — I’m always under audit it seems — I’ve been under audit for many years because the numbers are big and guess when you have a name, you’re audited.”

“Until such time that I’m not under audit, I would not be inclined to do that,” Trump said.

Currently there is no law requiring a presidential candidate release their tax returns, but the Democrats don’t care about laws — they want to harass President Trump.

This legal battle over Trump’s taxes could find its way to the Supreme Court.
