The AP reported:
Gunfire broke out Wednesday while police were trying to arrest a fugitive in Omaha, leaving an officer and a suspect critically wounded.
Deputy Police Chief David Baker said the gunfire erupted while officers were trying to serve a felony arrest warrant shortly before 1 p.m. Paramedics performed CPR on both the female officer and the suspect as they were taken to Creighton University Medical Center.
Police did not release additional details, and it wasn’t immediately clear how many other people were involved.
Neighbor Tiffany Atkins said she heard between five and 10 shots Wednesday afternoon in the Florence community neighborhood in north Omaha made up mostly of neat tudor-style brick homes along tree-lined streets. She said she immediately took shelter in her basement, even as she heard police cars swarming the scene within seconds of the shooting.
“I was raised in this neighborhood,” Atkins said. “This makes me want to move.”
About 20 police cars and the department’s mobile crime scene lab were in the neighborhood Wednesday afternoon as authorities investigated. Dozens of officers from several departments also guarded the hospital.
