Gay Couple Marries at West Point’s Cadet Chapel

The couple had already taken vows together in 1999 but they wanted to make a public statement so went to West Point to hold another ceremony.

Brenda “Sue” Fulton, 53, and Penelope Gnesin, 52, became the first same-sex couple to get married at West Point’s Cadet Chapel. The couple added other military trappings to their wedding, including a tradition called the saber arch, where officers or cadets hold their swords aloft over the newlyweds as they emerge from the church. Brenda Sue Fulton attended West Point in 1980 in the first class that allowed women.
