Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez has thanked Iran for its help and collaboration with Venezuela and other Latin American countries, and suggested setting up an “anti-imperialist” army to defend Latin America from possible US attacks.
Chavez, who is a long time critic of what he sees as US imperialism, was speaking at the sixth Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas summit (ALBA), taking place in Caracas, Venezuela.
ALBA, an international cooperation organization based on ideas of social, political, and economic integration between the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, is the alternative to the ALCA or Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), proposed by the United States.
During the summit, Chavez thanked Tehran’s efforts and especially those of Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in expanding commercial, economical, scientific and industrial cooperation with Latin America.
Chavez praised Iran and spoke about dozens of industrial and production projects taking place between the two countries.
He said that for Venezuela and Latin American, Iran is “a friend to trust”.

The BBC has more on Hugo’s paranoia:
Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez has called on other Latin American and Caribbean countries to form a military alliance against the United States. The vehemently anti-US leader says Nicaragua, Bolivia, Cuba and Dominica should create one united force.
Mr Chavez, a long time critic of what he sees as US imperialism, made the comments after a summit of its leaders. Despite constant US denials, Mr Chavez is convinced it poses a serious threat to South and Central America.
Chavez also accused pro-American neighbor Colombia of planning a military assault on Venezuela.
Colombia is also battling US Democrats for support. Democrats have withheld funds from the US ally to appease their union and far left supporters.
UPDATE: Insane Hugo Chavez chews coca leaves at the ALBA Summit!
