Zimbabwean police were attacked by activists in an “orgy of violence” after the brutal beatdown of Opposition Leader Morgan Tsvangirai over the weekend:

Police officials said three officers had been badly hurt in a petrol bomb attack late on Tuesday, telling state media the opposition’s “orgy of violence was spreading.”

“These actions are synchronized by people with resources and are happening throughout the country,” police spokesman Wayne Bvudzijena told Reuters.

“We believe that the attacks are assuming a militia type of form,” he added. State television showed pictures of badly burned officers receiving medical care in hospital after their house at a police post went up in flames.

Officials of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) said party chief Morgan Tsvangirai remained in hospital with head wounds sustained following his arrest on Sunday for participating in a banned political rally.

More on the court hearings after the arrests and brutality of Sunday from Sokwanele:

Pastors attended the court case and they came to the Hospital. They were refused permission to pray during the recess in the court proceedings, but they did anyway. I for one was reduced to tears by this powerful witnessing of Gods grace. They came later to the Hospital to pray with the victims and their families – the Police/militia refused them permission, so they went outside and prayed. We all know that prayer has no material boundaries.

In a strange twist… President Mugabe visited the hospital to see his ailing sister yesterday, the same hospital that the opposition leaders are staying at. Apart from Tsvangirai, 12 other opposition officials are in the hospital, including legislators Nelson Chamisa and Willias Madzimure. Sekai Holland and Grace Kwinje are also receiving treatment at the health centre.

All Africa describes that latest violence against the opposition in Zimbabwe:

Opposition officials said yesterday that police shot and wounded six MDC supporters in two separate pre-dawn raids on the home of Gift Tandare, the activist killed in clashes with the police in Highfield last Sunday. The first attack, witnesses said, was on Tuesday morning at Tandare’s funeral wake in Glen View.

Two activists, identified as MDC Glen View district youth chairman, Naison Mashambanhaka, and Dickson Mangongo were shot.

“Doctors say they may have to amputate the leg of one of the activists, but the other has been released,” said an MDC area representative who requested anonymity. He said the assailants were in a police truck.

The incident sparked dawn running battles between the police and opposition youths in the suburbs of Glen View and Budiriro.

In the second incident on Tuesday night, a suspected police squad returned to Tandare’s home, and ordered mourners to lie down, before assaulting them with batons. Mangongo, who had been shot the night before, was among four activists wounded in the fresh onslaught, officials said.
