Burmese Civilian Tortured to Death

A chilling story from the Asian Tribune:

On the 1st of May at about 8 p.m. Ko Aung Hlaing Win, aged 30, was handcuffed and taken away by 4 men in mufti while he was at the Lucky food stall at Aung Myae Thar Zan quarter in Hlaing township in Rangoon. The owner of the food stall went and informed the family about this.

He is a resident of Number 19 Aung Myae Tha Zan Kan Road in Ward No 1 , Hlaing township. His wife is Ma Hnin Sanda and the daughter is Ma Shan Shan. His father-in-law is U Shwe Gyo, Hlaing Township Organizer of the National League for Democracy led by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

The family was given no notice or information about this arrest by the authorities’ so on the 10th May his wife went to the Insein Prison and made enquiries but she was told nothing. She returned home only at 4 p.m.

On the 10th May at about 2 p.m. while Ma Hnin Sanda was making enquiries at Insein, her father and mother were sent for by the quarter SPDC and were told to be seated at their office. Then at 4 when she returned she was also called to the office and they were spoken to by Lt. Col. Min Hlaing, introduced to be the Commander of the Army Interrogation Corp and an army captain.

They were told that Aung Hlaing Win had died of a heart attack on the 7th and they were asked to accept one hundred thousand Kyats (about 100 US Dollar) for performing the 7th day after death religious ceremony.
