Reports: Al Qaeda Leader Ayman al-Zawahiri Killed by US Drone Strike in Afghanistan; Biden to Address Nation at 7:30 P.M. EDT

The AP and Politico are reporting that al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahri was killed this weekend. al-Zawahiri was most likely the target of a U.S. drone stike in Kabul this past weekend.

Al-Zawahiri took over al Qaeda after Osama bin Laden was killed in Pakistan in a U.S. raid in 2011.

Just after 5 p.m., The White House announced Joe Biden will address the nation at 7:30 p.m. EDT

AP: “AP source: US weekend strike in Afghanistan killed top al-Qaida leader Ayman al-Zawahri.”

Politico: “BREAKING: The United States killed Al-Qaeda leader Ayman Al-Zawahiri in a drone strike over the weekend, two people briefed on the operation told POLITICO.”

The FBI’s Most Wanted poster of al-Zawahiri:

The killing of Al-Zawahiri comes as one year anniversary nears of the Joe Biden turning over Afghanistan to the Taliban as a gift.

A drone strike in Kabul over the weekend is though to have taken out al-Zawahiri.

“Though not yet confirmed in initial reports, the US drone strike that killed al-Qaeda chief Zawahiri seems likely to have been the explosion that took place in downtown Kabul two days ago. Al-Qaeda chief killed in Taliban-controlled Kabul…”

The Taliban issued a statement condemning the attack, “The Taliban in a statement confirms that US drone strike targeted a house in Shirpur area of capital #Kabul. The #Taliban have condemned the attack as violation of Doha peace agreement & harmful for mutual cooperation in the future.”

“This morning Kabul was rocked by two different explosions. Taliban officials confirmed the incident but did not provide information about the location and nature of the explosions. Reports say that one explosion took place in Wazir Akbar Khan and the second in Dehmzang area .”
