Twenty-one years later, the former secretary of state has returned to the Met steps. Like many, she chose an ensemble imbued with meaning. Her custom Joseph Altuzarra gown features 60 women’s names embroidered along the neckline and hem, an homage to women who inspire her including Rosa Parks, Lady Bird Johnson, and Clinton’s mother, Dorothy Rodham.
The dress code called for gilded glamour, white tie. Instead of looking to Gilded Age clothing favored by the likes of the Astors and the Vanderbilts, Altuzarra looked at homemade quilts in the second half of the 19th century.
A maskless Hillary Clinton walked the red carpet as a masked servant tended to her custom gown.
