In a stunning blow to US gymnastics, US superstar Simone Biles pulled out of the Olympic team competition.
U.S. gymnastics superstar Simone Biles, the reigning Olympic champion, is out of Tuesday’s team finals.
The 24-year-old Biles, considered to be the greatest gymnast of all time, huddled with a trainer after landing her vault. She then exited the competition floor with the team doctor.
Biles returned several minutes later with her right leg wrapped. She took off her bar grips, and hugged teammates Grace McCallum, Sunisa Lee and Jordan Chiles before putting on a jacket and sweatpants.
The Guardian reported:
USA Gymnastics has issued an official statement regarding Simone Biles’ withdrawal:
Simone has withdrawn from the team final competition due to a medical issue. She will be assessed daily to determine medical clearance for future competitions.”
…NBC is reporting that Biles didn’t withdraw due to injury but due to her mental health, according to her coach. Elsewhere, ROC’s Viktoria Listunova (14.9) caps another gorgeous rotation for the ROC on bars, just like in Sunday’s qualifying.
Teammate Suni Lee is doing well:
