New Poll Finds Most Voters Oppose Medicare For All – Want To Keep Private Health Insurance

Democrats like Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren are pushing hard for Medicare for all.

But according to a new poll, most American voters don’t want it.

Voters oppose ‘Medicare-for-all’ system that replaces private insurance: poll

It may be a winning ticket in the battle for the Democratic presidential nomination, but two new polls indicate “Medicare-for-all” is far from the right prescription in the general election race for the White House.

Nearly two-thirds of Democratic primary voters questioned in a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal national poll say they support a government-run single-payer Medicare-for-all style system that would replace existing private insurance.

That plan is championed by Sens. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Bernie Sanders of Vermont, the two progressive standard-bearers in the record-setting field of Democratic White House hopefuls.

But among all voters, support for such a plan plunges to just 41 percent. About 56 percent of registered voters oppose a “Medicare-for-all” plan that replaces private insurance.

The poll, released Sunday, indicates that what two-thirds of all voters do like is allowing a Medicare buy-in for those under 65 years old. That’s in line with the public option being pitched by former Vice President Joe Biden. Currently, the taxpayer-funded program covers Americans 65 and older.

Bernie is now taking it a step further. He wants to cancel everyone’s medical debt.

Bloomberg reports:

Sanders Unveils Plan to Cancel $81 Billion in U.S. Medical Debt

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders on Saturday introduced a plan to cancel $81 billion in past-due medical bills and replace private credit-reporting companies with a public registry that will exclude debt tied to health costs.

The Vermont Democrat proposed revising a 2005 bankruptcy law to let people with high bills use the courts to seek relief, and eliminate the means-testing requirement to file for protection from creditors, according to a statement from his campaign.

“The very concept of medical debt should not exist,” Sanders said. “It is immoral and unconscionable that families across the country are finding themselves nearly broke or bankrupt because of crippling medical debt while the health care industry made more than $100 billion in profits last year.”

The plan notes 79 million Americans “struggle to pay” bills, or are paying off medical debts.

Under the proposal, the federal government would step in to negotiate and pay off past-due bills in collections reported to credit agencies. The plan also would replace for-profit credit reporting companies with a public registry that uses a computer algorithm to determine creditworthiness.

Is there anything Bernie doesn’t want to make free?

Oh right. Taxes.
