Trump Says Comey ‘Got Lucky’ When Attorney General Decided Not To Prosecute Former FBI Director

President Trump has a way of cutting through the noise and getting to the point.

“The fact that James Comey was not prosecuted for the absolutely horrible things he did just shows how fair and reasonable Attorney General Bill Barr is. So many people and experts that I have watched and read would have taken an entirely different course. Comey got Lucky!” Trump wrote Friday on Twitter.

The report released Thursday by the Department of Justice’s attorney general showed that Comey violated FBI policies at least 25 times by writing, keeping and leaking memos he wrote when he was FBI director of his conversations with Trump, both before and after he took office. Despite the numerous violations, the DOJ decided not bring criminal charges.

Inspector General Michael Horowitz said Comey’s memos were “official FBI records” and thus government property. By leaking them to reporters, he said Comey set a “dangerous example.”

“By not safeguarding information obtained during the course of his FBI employment, and by using it to create public pressure for official action, Comey set a dangerous example for the over 35,000 current FBI employees—and the many thousands more former FBI employees—who similarly have access to or knowledge of non-public information,” the report said.

Trump on Friday also bashed Comey for creating the Russia collusion probe, which — after two years of investigation — produced nothing.

“The disastrous IG Report on James Comey shows, in the strongest of terms, how unfairly I, and tens of millions of great people who support me, were treated. Our rights and liberties were illegally stripped away by this dishonest fool. We should be given our stolen time back?” Trump wrote on Twitter.

And the story isn’t over. Horowitz has acknowledged that his office is investigating potential abuses of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) by the FBI leading up to the Russia collusion probe. And Attorney General William Barr has assigned U.S. Attorney for Connecticut John Durham to investigate improper government surveillance on the Trump campaign in 2016.

Trump also ripped Comey shortly after the damning report was released.

“Perhaps never in the history of our Country has someone been more thoroughly disgraced and excoriated than James Comey in the just released Inspector General’s Report. He should be ashamed of himself!” Trump said in a tweet.
