Republican National Committee and Others Halt Twitter Advertising Following Mitch McConnell’s Campaign Account Being Suspended

The Republican National Committee and House, Senator Ted Cruz, the Trump campaign and Senate GOP campaign arms have halted their Twitter advertising spending following the suspension of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell‘s campaign account earlier this week.

The suspension of McConnell’s account is just the latest example of the trend of Big Tech censoring conservative voices, but is being referred to by many as a severe escalation of the problem. His account was locked after the campaign tweeted a video of a Black Lives Matter protester yelling outside his Kentucky home, saying that she hopes the Senate Majority Leader had “broken his little, raggedy, wrinkled-ass neck.”

Twitter claimed that the video “violated our violent threats policy, specifically threats involving physical safety.”

The groups that have pulled their advertising have stated that they will no longer spend resources on politically biased platforms.

“Twitter’s hostile actions toward Leader McConnell’s campaign are outrageous and we will not tolerate it,” Jesse Hunt, a spokesman with the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), said in a statement to The Hill. “The NRSC will suspend all spending with Twitter until further notice. We will not spend our resources on a platform that silences conservatives.”

Parker Hamilton Poling, the executive director of the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), tweeted similar sentiments.

Poling wrote, “I have directed the @nrcc to immediately halt all spending with @Twitter until they correct their inexcusable targeting of @Team_Mitch. We will stand firmly with our friends against anti-conservative bias.”

Likewise, the head of the RNC and the Trump campaign also joined the campaign on Thursday, according to RNC’s chief of staff — the Hill reports.

Senator Cruz also tweeted his support for boycotting Twitter spending, saying that his campaign will be following suit and linking to a petition to stop the bias against conservatives.

McConnell’s account was still locked on Thursday.
