‘The Case Is Closed’: Trump Reacts To Mueller Statement

Special counsel Robert Mueller delivered a bizarre statement on Wednesday, saying essentially that after a two-year investigation into alleged collusion between President Trump and Russia during the 2016 election turned up insufficient evidence to charge the president, Trump still may have committed a crime.

Trump, though, had an immediate reaction that likely mirrors that of many Americans.

“Nothing changes from the Mueller Report. There was insufficient evidence and therefore, in our Country, a person is innocent. The case is closed! Thank you,” Trump wrote on Twitter.

Mainstream media — especially the talking heads on CNN — breathlessly reported that Mueller had said in his nine-minute statement at the Justice Department had not exonerated Trump, instead declaring that there was “insufficient evidence” to bring charges against Trump.

But Trump’s lawyer Rudy Guiliani said that’s exactly the point.

“When a prosecutor can’t reach a decision, that’s a decision. So there’s no case on collusion, there’s no case on obstruction,” the former New York City mayor said.

Mueller said in his statement that charging the president with a crime was “not an option we could consider” because of longstanding Justice Department policy. He also said he would not testify before Congress — “The report is my testimony.”

But Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) said the ball is now in Congress’ court.

“Given that Special Counsel Mueller was unable to pursue criminal charges against the President, it falls to Congress to respond to the crimes, lies and other wrongdoing of President Trump – and we will do so. No one, not even the President of the United States, is above the law,” said Nadler, who is chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.
