President Trump on Thursday evening announced that a 5% tariff will be imposed on all Mexican imports beginning June 10th and will gradually increase until the illegal immigration stops.
TRUMP: “On June 10th, the United States will impose a 5% Tariff on all goods coming into our Country from Mexico, until such time as illegal migrants coming through Mexico, and into our Country, STOP. A record number of illegal aliens are flooding over the US-Mexico border with no relief in sight.
On Friday Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador attacked President Trump, writing in a letter that Trump’s “America First” policy was a “fallacy.”
Obrador also unleashed against the American people saying, the U.S. president is “turning the United States, overnight, from a country of brotherly love for immigrants from around the world, to a bolted space, where there’s stigmatizing, mistreatment, abuse, persecution, and a denial of the right to justice to those who seek — with sacrifice and hard work — to live free from misery.”
Obrador then lectured the US on the meaning of the Statue of Liberty saying that “social problems are not solved with duties or coercive measures,” and alluded to the United States’ history as a nation of immigrants: “The Statue of Liberty is not an empty symbol.”
