Speaker Pelosi, House Dems Struggle to Find Unity in ‘Next Steps to Take’ in Response to Mueller Report

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said Monday that although House Democrats discussed impeaching President Trump, they struggled to find unity in their response to Mueller’s report.

Nancy Pelosi scheduled a Monday evening conference call with top House Democrats to discuss Mueller’s garbage report and the “next steps to be taken.”

Democrat lawmakers in both chambers have been beating the impeachment drum since Mueller’s report was released Thursday morning.

Last week, Pelosi cited the portion of Mueller’s report that states, “We concluded Congress has authority to prohibit a president’s corrupt use of his authority in order to protect the integrity of the administration of justice,” which “accords with our constitutional system of checks and balances and the principle that no person is above the law.”

Just hours before Monday evening’s conference call, Pelosi sent a letter to members of her caucus, asking for unity on what to do next regarding their response to Mueller’s garbage report.

Via Fox News Congress reporter Chad Pergram:

“As to the President’s conduct, we will scrupulously assert Congress’ constitutional duty to..conduct oversight over the other branches of government, unified in our search for the truth and in upholding the security of our elections.”

“While our views range from proceeding to investigate the findings of the Mueller report or proceeding directly to impeachment, we all firmly agree that we should proceed down a path of finding the truth,” Pelosi wrote.

“It is also important to know that the facts regarding holding the President accountable can be gained outside of impeachment hearings.”

As we proceed to uncover the truth and present additional needed reforms to protect our democracy, we must show the American people we are proceeding free from passion or prejudice, strictly on the presentation of fact.

Whether currently indictable or not, it is clear that the President has, at a minimum, engaged in highly unethical and unscrupulous behavior which does not bring honor to the office he holds.

It is also clear that the Congressional Republicans have an unlimited appetite for such low standards. The GOP should be ashamed of what the Mueller report has revealed, instead of giving the President their blessings.

House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-NY) floated impeachment on Thursday during a presser.

Nadler told reporters that impeaching President Trump is “one possibility,” but that it is too soon to tell as he wants see the unredacted Mueller report and “other evidence.”

In the other chamber, Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) called for the House to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Trump.

It will interesting to see if Pelosi plays with fire and decides to move forward with impeachment, something she previously stated she would not do.

President Trump went on offense and slammed the rabid Democrats.

“How do you impeach a Republican President for a crime that was committed by the Democrats?” Trump said in a tweet on Sunday.
