President Trump and First Lady Melania Salute President Bush at the Capitol (Photos, Video)

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania paid an unannounced visit to the Capitol Monday night to pay their respects to the late President George H.W. Bush as he lies in state in the Rotunda.

The Trump’s arrived at the Capitol around 8:20 p.m. EST and walked into the Rotunda, which had been cleared of general public visitors for security. The solemn First Couple paid silent tribute as they stood in front of Bush’s flag draped coffin that rested on the Lincoln catafalque. After about a minute, Trump saluted Bush while Melania placed her hand over her heart. The couple then silently left the Rotunda.

Afterward, Trump posted video of the salute to Bush.

CBS News reporter Mark Knoller tweeted about the press’ keeping the visit under wraps until the Trumps arrived at the Capitol, “The visit to the Rotunda was not on Pres Trump’s press schedule. Press pool was honor-bound not to report his Rotunda visit until he arrived.”
