President Trump and First Lady Melania Make Post-Christmas Visit to Troops in Iraq

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders announced President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania visited U.S. troops in Iraq on Wednesday, “President Trump and the First Lady traveled to Iraq late on Christmas night to visit with our troops and Senior Military leadership to thank them for their service, their success, and their sacrifice and to wish them a Merry Christmas.”

UPDATE: The AP reported Trump said he has “no plans at all” to remove troops from Iraq.

This post will be updated.

Air Force One departed Joint Base Andrews around midnight headed toward Europe with tracking turned on so its location was public knowledge until it flew over Hungary Wednesday morning.

Reuters White House reporter Steve Holland reports the President and First Lady got a “solid welcome” from the troops, “President Trump and Melania now visiting Al Asad air base in Iraq, west of Baghdad. Getting a solid welcome the troops.”

ABC’s Martha Raddatz noted the First Lady’s presence is a rarity. (Then First Lady Laura Bush visited Afghanistan in 2008.)
