Midterm 2018 – VIRGINIA House: Denver Riggleman (R) Leads Leslie Cockburn (D)

Military veteran and businessman Denver Riggleman is the Republican candidate in Virginia’s 5th Congressional district. According to an internal GOP poll, he is leading Leslie Cockburn, a journalist, by as many as 10 points.

The Washington Times reports:

Republican Denver Riggleman up 10 points in Va. congressional race, internal poll shows

Republican Denver Riggleman is leading Democrat Leslie Cockburn by 10 points in Virginia’s 5th Congressional District race, according to an internal GOP campaign poll out Friday.

Mr. Riggleman led Ms. Cockburn, 49 percent to 39 percent, according to the poll, portions of which were described to The Washington Times by a GOP official.

The numbers are undoubtedly a welcome sign for Republican officials, as the survey came back just days after the House GOP leadership-aligned Congressional Leadership Fund released its first TV ad of the race.

“Sabato’s Crystal Ball,” a political forecasting newsletter based out of the University of Virginia — which sits in the 5th District — also moved the race from “leans Republican” to “toss-up” just this week.

This snippet from Cavalier Daily tells you what you need to know about Leslie Cockburn:

Prior to entering politics, Cockburn worked as an investigative journalist for 35 years. She worked as a “60 Minutes” CBS News producer, a “Frontline” PBS correspondent and is a published author.

“[It is] very unusual for someone like me to go into this job, running for this congress, but I really think we are at the most critical time in this country in my lifetime,” Cockburn said.

Riggleman is running a tough campaign, as you can see from this recent ad:

Of course, like every other race, Republicans can’t take anything for granted.

Come on Virginia. Vote Riggleman!
