White House Calls Out CNN’s April Ryan for Calling First Lady Melania Trump ‘Not Culturally American’

The White House called out CNN political analyst April Ryan Monday night for calling First Lady Melania Trump “not culturally American” during a discussion on Erin Burnett Out Front on the First Lady’s Be Best anti-cyber bullying and addiction initiative announced earlier Monday.

The 48-year-old Slovenia-born First Lady became a U.S. citizen in 2006 following her 1996 arrival to the U.S. and 2001 granting of permanent residence status. She married Donald Trump in 2005.

Ryan said of the First Lady, “…This is, this is a first lady who is not, um, culturally, um, American, but she is learning the ways. This is not just an American issue, these are not just American issues, these are international issues. You know, cyber-bullying is an international issue, social media is international. And also the opioid addiction issue, so it’s not just here, but it’s abroad as well. And we’ll see if she takes this message abroad as well as she rolls this out for the next, uh, four years.”

Steven Cheung, Special Assistant to the President and White House Director of Strategic Response, called out Ryan on Twitter, writing, “On @OutFrontCNN, @AprilDRyan just said @FLOTUS is not “culturally American.” What does that even mean? On a day when Mrs. Trump unveiled a very important initiative #BeBest, reporters can’t bring themselves to talk about anything but rumors and innuendo.”

Ryan was a decades long seat warmer in the White House press room for American Urban Radio Networks until she gained notoriety for grandstanding and making faces during briefings by Press Secretary Sean Spicer and his successor Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
