Majority of Americans Believe Mueller’s Russia Investigation is Politically Motivated

A majority of Americans believe that special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election is politically motivated, according to a new poll from CBS News.

According to the survey, 53 percent of Americans believe that the probe is politically motivated, while 44 percent believe that the investigation is justified.

Despite many believing that this is a political witch hunt, 76 percent believe that President Donald Trump should cooperate with the investigation.

“That is a drop, however, from January, when 84 percent of respondents said Trump should cooperate with the special counsel,” The Hill reports.

The drop in belief that Trump should cooperate was most prominent with Republicans. While 73 percent believed that the president should go along with the probe in January, only 53 percent believe so now.

Mueller’s team has reportedly rejected an option to have President Trump answer questions in written form, which some in DC have speculated may be because he wants an in person interview to set a perjury trap.

The telephone poll of 1,101 adults was conducted between May 3-6, with a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points.
