‘Guns Blazing’ Drive-By Shooting Blocks From White House Shatters Windows, Wounds Two

An eyewitness described ‘guns blazing’ in a drive-by shooting early Friday morning just blocks from the White House in the Dupont Circle neighborhood in Northwest Washington, D.C., that left two of the three targeted men wounded. The shooting scene is also near the Washington Hilton, site of the annual White House Correspondents Dinner attended annually by the president.

The shooting took place around 2 a.m. in the 1700 block of Connecticut Avenue an area known for popular restaurants, bars and shops. Streets in the area were closed for hours while police investigated the shooting.

Windows were reported shattered at businesses and plate-glass panels at a Metro bus stop shelter were also destroyed.

The Prince of Petworth blog reported on alleged eyewitness reports to the shooting:

There was a harrowing description posted on the Dupont Listserv based on “eyewitness accounts”:

“There are reports that one person was shot, possibly in the leg, but no reports on condition. There were 5 cars that sped the wrong direction (South) on 20th Street, guns blazing. Some shots are believed to have traveled East down S Street (based on a witness who was on the sidewalk in the 1900 block of S Street NW) as the gunfire started. He reported that one bullet sounded as though it traveled right by him and on down the street, while another one made a sound as though it had hit metal.

Initial indications are that the shooters may have come from, or targeted people who were at, the Salty Dog at 1723 Connecticut. A band that had been playing there was apparently packing their gear into a van parked on 20th at S St (across from Glenn’s). It’s not clear whether they were involved in any way.”

The Borderstan blog reported a ‘volley’ of shots was heard (Borderstan also posted a photo of the damaged bus shelter.)

“A Dupont resident wrote on the neighborhood listserv that they heard a “volley” of gunshots and several “speeding cars” in the area around the time of the shooting.”

The Washington Post reported one of the wounded men was arrested when he was found trying to hide a handgun.

“A gunman in a car opened fire on three men walking along Connecticut Avenue near Dupont Circle early Friday, wounding two of them, according to D.C. police.

…Police said the gunman was in a white Chevrolet Malibu and that the shots were fired as the group walked north on Connecticut. One man was struck in the foot, the other in the right leg.

The man wounded in the leg was found by police in an alley near Connecticut and S streets lying on his stomach and trying to “slide the firearm” under a trash bin, according to the police report.

Police said they recovered the gun and arrested the injured man, who was taken to an area hospital for treatment. Charges were pending Friday morning.”
