Headlines this week touted Iranian President Rouhani calling the Holocaust “reprehensible” in an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour:
Other journalists took this as a sign that maybe the Iranians are starting to come around. Maybe the Iranians aren’t so hell-bent on destroying Israel after all, even though they’ve called Israel a “cancerous tumor” that will soon be destroyed? And threatened Israel’s destruction again last month?

Not so fast, say the Iranians. It was a bad translation. Rouhani never said, “reprehensible.”

What Rouhani really said was some platitudes about, in general, genocide being a bad thing, including what the Nazis did. If the Iranians destroyed Israel? That would be completely different!
But why the correction? Probably because of that part in yellow. Nothing could be more offensive to the Iranian leadership than the suggestion that a Jewish life, a Christian life, and a Muslim life are equally valuable.
