Report: Gov. Gary Johnson (R-NM) May Announce Switch to Libertarian Party

guest post by Mike LaRoche

I suppose that like James Taranto, I should classify this as a “Bottom Story of the Day” or a “Question No One is Asking”, but reports are surfacing that current GOP presidential candidate Gary Johnson, governor of New Mexico from 1995 to 2003, is planning to switch his allegiance to the Libertarian Party and seek that party’s nomination.

Earlier today, the Independent Political Report released the following bit of news:

Numerous sources have reported to IPR that former two term Governor and Republican presidential candidate Gary Johnson is going to announce his switch to the Libertarian Party race tomorrow. Rumors have been swirling for weeks now that former Governor Johnson was going to run third party or become a member of the Libertarian Party, but now the rumor has been confirmed with a number of insiders.

An update later followed from IPR, wherein Johnson said that at present, he is only considering the idea:

Johnson has told a reporter that this is something he’s looking at and that he will be in New York tomorrow to do “as many media appearances as they can wind me up and send me in that direction.” But he said he wasn’t announcing the switch tomorrow.

Stay tuned…or not.
