Moderate Muslim Ulil Abshar Abdalla was the target of a bombing this week after advocating for religious tolerance. His belief in religious tolerance has made him a target in Muslim Indonesia. On March 1, hard-line groups such as the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI), the Islamic People’s Forum (FUI) and Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia carried a large poster of nine people who “undermined” Islam, including Ulil and Goenawan. Ulil said he never took the threats seriously until Tuesday’s bombing.
Tuesday’s bomb was hidden in a book entitled:
“They Deserved to be Killed: Because of their Sins to Islam and Muslims.”
4 people were injured.
