Saddam's Half Brother and Former Chief Justice Hanged in Iraq

UPDATE: FOX News reports his head was severed during the execution:

Government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh confirmed the executions, saying those attending the hangings included a prosecutor, a judge and a physician.

He also said Ibrahim’s head was severed from his body during his hanging.

“In a rare incident, the head of the accused Barzan Ibrahim al-Hassan was separated from his body during the execution,” al-Dabbagh told reporters.

Iraqi authorities said they would not release the video.

There is no word yet if the Aljazeera news anchors are wearing black as they did when Saddam was hung two weeks ago.

The BBC is reporting:

The half-brother of Saddam Hussein and the former head of Iraq’s Revolutionary Court have been hanged, prosecutor Munqith al-Faroon has said.
The two executions were carried out before dawn on Monday, he added.

Barzan al-Tikriti and Awad Hamad al-Bandar were convicted over the killing of 148 Shias after a 1982 attempt on Saddam’s life in Dujail.

A witness at Barzan’s trial said Barzan had personally supervised his torture with electric shocks in Baghdad and had eaten grapes while the man screamed in agony. (Aljazeera)

The spokesman for the Iraqi government is going to hold a press conference shortly:
AP reports:

“They (the government) called us before dawn and told us to send someone. I sent a judge to witness the execution and it happened,” al-Faroon said.

Two aides to Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki confirmed that the executions had taken place. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the government had not yet released the information.

Government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh was to hold a news conference later Monday and was expected to announce the hangings.

Jules Crittenden points out that the AP failed to mention in their reports that the predicted outburst of pro-Saddam violence never happened.
