Iran Admits to Links with Al Qaeda Group Who Killed US Soldiers
As gruesome new details were reported on the deaths of the two US soldiers found in Iraq last week, Iran admitted it holds influence with the Mujahedeen Shura Council, the group that took responsibility for the kidnapping and killing of the Americans.
The Al Qaeda-linked Mujahedeen Shura Council also took credit for slaughtering 4 Russian diplomats over the weekend.
The Mujahedeen Shura Council took credit for kidnapping Private Kristian Menchaca of Houston and Private Thomas Tucker of Oregon near Youssifiya. The terror group also put out a statement after the death of the two US soldiers taking credit for their barbaric deaths.
More details were released today on the condition of the bodies of the US soldiers when they were discovered:
Explosives experts had to dismantle three roadside bombs to reach the brutalized bodies of two missing U.S. soldiers, whose remains were found tied together with a bomb between one of the soldier’s legs, the U.S. military said.
In a statement that provided additional detail on the killings, the military said the bodies of U.S. Army Pfc. Kristian Menchaca of Houston, Texas, and Pfc. Thomas Tucker of Madras, Oregon, were found at 7:50 p.m. on June 19 not far from where they were abducted when insurgents attacked their checkpoint.
The military said it waited until the next morning to recover the bodies because an Iraqi in the area had warned the area was booby-trapped.
The bodies were found next to a road near the village of Mufaraji, northwest of Youssifiyah, 20 kilometres south of Baghdad, the military said late Monday. The region is commonly known as the Triangle of Death.
“At first light, the engineers cleared the route up to the site of the bodies, fighting their way through three roadside bombs in the process,” the statement said.
“The two bodies, severely traumatized, were found bound together with an (improvised explosive device) between one of the soldiers’ legs,” it said. “The engineers successfully cleared the IED and the surrounding area to allow recovery of the remains.”
A U.S. military official said last week that one and possibly both young men were tortured and beheaded.
Tehran is prepared to assist in releasing four Russian diplomats abducted in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, three weeks ago, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi said Sunday.
Russian diplomat Vitaly Titov was killed during the attack on an embassy car in the capital of Iraq on June 3. The kidnappers seized Fyodor Zaitsev, third secretary of the embassy, and also diplomats Rinat Agliulin, Anatoly Smirnov and Oleg Fedoseyev.
Asefi said Iran was denouncing the kidnapping of the Russian diplomats in Iraq.
According to Asefi, if the Russian side applies to Iran with a respective request, the Islamic Republic is prepared to meddle into the situation and take steps, as far as its possibilities can allow it, to release the Russian diplomats.
Asefi said there was a large number of extremist and terrorist groups operating in Iraq, and the U.S. presence in that country had not helped stabilize the situation.
The Russians were eventually killed by the Al Qaeda group in Iraq. But, not before Iran admitted to holding influence with the terrorists in Iraq.
