Video: Hispanic Taco Bell Worker Refuses to Serve African-Americans Because They Don’t Speak Spanish

Video posted by an African-American woman shows a Hispanic Taco Bell drive-thru worker in Hialeah, Florida, refusing to serve the woman and her male companion because they don’t speak Spanish. During the confrontation two other Hispanic Taco Bell workers come to the window but do not serve the American customers. At one point the drive-thru worker threatened to call police on the couple.

The three-minute-plus video was posted to Facebook by the customer Alexandria Montgomery on Wednesday and has been picked up by local media. The worker has since been fired, according to reports.

Hispanic Taco Bell worker refusing to serve an African-American couple because they don’t speak Spanish displays what some say is a racist hand gesture to the couple.

Toward the end of the video an exasperated Montogomery can be heard commenting, “This is America. Y’all don’t take over the entire population.”

Shorter video posted by WSVN-TV:

Longer version posted by the Miami Herald:

At the end of the longer version Montgomery, speaking English, asks the worker her name. The worker replies, “Luisa.” Montgomery says she will return tomorrow. Luisa replies, “Okay.”

Excerpt from WSVN:

Alexandria Montgomery told 7News she was trying to place an order at the drive-through window of a Taco Bell at 785 East Ninth St. in Hialeah around 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday night.

“She was saying something in Spanish that I didn’t understand,” Montgomery recalled. “I replied and said, ‘No habla espanol,’ and she replied and said, ‘No habla ingles.’”

When she could not order through the speaker, Montgomery decided to drive up to the window and started recording video on her cell phone when the worker still refused to take her order because she wasn’t speaking Spanish.

“I simply wanted a quesadilla and that’s not hard to understand in Spanish, because I think it’s a Spanish word,” she said.

“Do you have a manager here?” Montgomery can be heard asking in the video.

The employee replied in Spanish, “She is in her house sleeping.”

Excerpt from the Miami Herald:

“Honey, I have a car behind you,” the employee says in Spanish and closes the window.

“Can you move please? I have an order behind you. There is no one who speaks English,” the woman tells Montgomery in the video and threatens to call the police.

“This is Hialeah, I’m sorry,” she said in Spanish.

Two other Taco Bell workers approached the drive thru window when they heard the altercation, but apparently they did not try to help the client.

“No more, papi,” the clerk said in Spanish to a man who was in the car with Montgomery and was trying to argue that they were in the United States.

Finally, they had to leave without making an order.

…Hialeah is considered the city with the largest Hispanic population in the United States.

About 89 percent of its residents speak Spanish as their first or second language and more than 94 percent consider themselves Hispanic or Latino, according to the 2010 census.”
