Video: Good Samaritan Shot by Thug Dragging Woman Down Street in New Orleans
New Orleans police released surveillance video of the shooting of a man who intervened trying to save a woman who was being dragged down a New Orleans street early Friday morning.
The incident took place at Magazine and St. Mary streets in the Lower Garden District, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.
Police released the graphic video in the hope that someone would recognize the shooter or his getaway vehicle.
Police said Peter Gold, a fourth-year medical student at Tulane University, was driving in the area and saw a man dragging a woman down the street. Gold pulled over, got out of his vehicle and approached the man. The man pulled a gun on Gold and demanded his property. Gold said he had none so the man shot him in the abdomen.
The video shows the man repeatedly tried to fire a ‘coup de grace’ head shot at Gold as he lay crumpled on the sidewalk but the gun kept jamming. The man gave up and then got into an SUV and sped away.
Gold was reported to be in guarded condition.
New Orleans police posted a video to Facebook of their press conference about the shooting and the release of the surveillance video.
The New Orleans Advocate added details about the shooting:
“Private security camera footage viewed Friday afternoon by The New Orleans Advocate captured a man carrying a woman from Magazine to his car on St. Mary. The man is seen setting her down to open his door, and she falls over just as Gold, who had been driving down Magazine, drives up on St. Mary and gets out to help.
“The first man is then seen grabbing the woman’s purse and getting into his car as Gold approaches. At that point the assailant gets out of his car, takes out what appears to be an automatic weapon and points it at Gold’s head. The gun appears to jam, and the man lowers it and shoots Gold in the stomach.
“He then raises the gun and attempts to fire three times while Gold is lying injured on the ground, but the gun jams again. The man then flees in a light-colored sport utility vehicle before bystanders emerge from nearby apartments.”
