Everyone has been celebrating the recent fall in gas prices. Everyone except President Obama.

The Daily Mail reports that President Obama stated in a speech Wednesday that Americans shouldn’t be getting too comfortable with low gas prices:

“President Barack Obama is cautioning Americans not to get too comfortable with low gas prices.

Folks should enjoy’ the decrease in fuel costs, Obama said, but they should stay mindful that it won’t last forever.

I would strongly advise American consumers to continue to think about how you save money at the pump because it is good for the environment, it’s good for family pocketbooks and if you go back to old habits and suddenly gas is back at $3.50, you are going to not be real happy,’ told the Detroit News.

While visiting a Ford car factory just outside of Detroit today Obama will trumpet the rebirth of the auto industry and encourage Americans to switch to fuel efficient and hybrid cars like the ones produced in the Wayne, Michigan, plant.”

President Obama isn’t actually concerned about how much money is in American’s pocketbooks (except in the case of the top 10% of wage earners). He is concerned that consistently low gas prices will destroy his legacy. The legacy that consists of fundamentally transforming the United States into a more environmentally sustainable nation. Where high energy prices force people to live more “green”  is the norm, and centralized monitoring and control of energy resources is the rule of the land.
