Statement from the President on the Senate Deal to Extend Middle Class Tax Cuts

Leaders from both parties in the Senate came together to reach an agreement that passed with overwhelming bipartisan support today that protects 98 percent of Americans and 97 percent of small business owners from a middle class tax hike. While neither Democrats nor Republicans got everything they wanted, this agreement is the right thing to do for our country and the House should pass it without delay.

This agreement will also grow the economy and shrink our deficits in a balanced way – by investing in our middle class, and by asking the wealthy to pay a little more.

What’s more, today’s agreement builds on previous efforts to reduce our deficits. Last year, I worked with Democrats and Republicans to cut spending by more than $1 trillion. Tonight’s agreement does even more by asking millionaires and billionaires to begin to pay their fair share for the first time in twenty years. As promised, that increase will be immediate, and it will be permanent.

There’s more work to do to reduce our deficits, and I’m willing to do it. But tonight’s agreement ensures that, going forward, we will continue to reduce the deficit through a combination of new spending cuts and new revenues from the wealthiest Americans. And as we address our ongoing fiscal challenges, I will continue to fight every day on behalf of the middle class and all those fighting to get into the middle class to forge an economy that grows from the middle out, not from the top down.

  1. HA! Up yours your Highness, by the way, somewhere the Chinese are saying your brain is about the size of a turtle’e egg. (being called a turtle is insulting in Chinese culture)

  2. “Last year, I worked with Democrats and Republicans to cut spending by more than $1 trillion.”

Does anyone know what this was? Did we just miss it?

  3. Another monstrosity passed in a rush in the middle of the night.
Now they can read it to see what is in it.

Never mind, they don’t care, that’s for us to deal with.

  4. Permanent!!!! How does that work–the dictator can legislate that no future congress/president can change what he does–I don’t think so. More division, more envy, more lies. Want to vomit—

  5. No spending cuts.

    They’re insane.

  6. We definitely need a part-time congress. 120 days or so, for about $65. No omnibus bills ,no bills more than 10 pages, single issue only. No gangs of 6 or 32, No meeting with theWH behind closed doors. Every bill is debatedon the floor or of each body and no vmore voice votes, all roll call votes. Each member of Congress goes back home to work, yes work in their chosen job.
Live at home with their family. endure the “stink”(cf Harry REid) of their neighbors.everything they pass applies to them too. No special health plan or retirement plan.

  7. Did Mitch and the print that off? Framed in the office so everyone can see dear leader is soooo happy with Mitch. ,

  8. No debt ceiling deal – this is a win for the republicans

  9. Thanks to the deficit-reduction-fetishists raising taxes is what Obama ran on.

  10. I am always amazed at the perpetually stupid masses who voted for this idiot don’t seem to get it through their thick heads that this will only ensure those who are affected by this will change the way they handle their income. This is not a wealth tax. If it were, you would be hard pressed to find anyone on Capital Hill supporting this since most of them are millionaires. Barry himself has managed to grow his wealth to around $10 million. It’s probably more, but with this prez, it’s whatever they want the stupid to know.

  11. It’s time to let them get their way, raise taxes! We all know what the outcome will be, maybe once and for all we can put the thought that raising taxes on the wealthy is the answer to all of our ills. Let it start hurting those people who voted this idiot back into office. Free isn’t free, someone pays for it. Once they figure out that those freebies are gone, they’ll be talking out of the other side of their mouths and regretting their votes. They voted for him, we’ve been suffering for years with this moron, it’s time they do their time! Makes me sick to think that he’ll be taking the oath of office AGAIN and partying for days on our money.

  12. I’m curious about what happened to Harry Reid. It appears that Mitch went “over Harry’s head” to Obama to get Biden to take control of the Senate to get this done. It’s like Reid was pushed out of the way and it then becaue the McConnell/Biden team to bring the Senate together.

  13. 89 U.S. Senators decided to side with the philosophy of Marx, and 3 of the 8 that dissented didn’t feel the Marxism was complete enough.

5 Senators out of 100 spoke for Capitalism and private property rights ensured by the Constitution. 5 out of 100.

I guess if it had been 3, they might have been called 3 percenters.

  14. BigL–well said and as it was at the beginning–

  15. It does no good to even comment on this? We have no need for a Republican Party any longer. Do we need a rubber stamp for the all powerful Democrats? That is all the Republican Party is now. No more principles, no more loyal opposition. They parrot the president saying HE WON so he gets everything he wants! And all the people said Amen!

  16. #8, david,

The rinos have never stopped an increase in the debt ceiling. The best they can claim is a short delay.

They have already accepted massive, continued increases in spending. Debt ceiling increase in 3…2…1…

  17. It is perfect time to make some plans for the longer term and it is time to be happy. I’ve read this submit and if I could I desire to suggest you some fascinating things or tips. Perhaps you can write subsequent articles referring to this article. I wish to read more things about it!

  18. Its 1773 again
King George III & his evil parliment have taken Washington DC
The TEA is on the wharf
Lexington & Concord are down the road.

Its time to party! Tea party.

  19. Obama gloating, dancing in the end zone even before the House votes. Just like yesterday’s attempt to humiliate the GOP enough they vote no. (As if..)

The guys is a thug and he’ll go too far one day.
….and we’ll all shrug; who ya gonna call, anyway? the Pope?
