Soft Targets in the US Mirror South Africa and Make No Sense

Glenn Jakins, a US citizen from South Africa living in Utah, wrote this piece for the Daily Herald this week on the latest proposed gun control laws. Jakins wonders why anyone would want to create a soft target where innocent people cannot be protected.
Good question.

The Daily Herald

Having grown up in South Africa in the 1970s and ’80s, and serving there in the military as a riot control officer, I have seen my fair share of violence — mostly violence through senseless acts of terrorism by the African National Congress on what are termed “soft targets” within South Africa.

Soft targets are targets that are easy to attack. Generally they were places where there would be little or no defense and where many innocent children and adults would be murdered.

Cowards go for soft targets so they can achieve their sordid goals with little or no resistance.

When I came to the United States more than 20 years ago, I looked forward to a life with more peace in a place where I did not have to carry a firearm everywhere I went (as I and countless other honest people did in South Africa).

As the ANC took power in the mid ’90s, the government sought to disarm the general population through many strict gun control laws. They were unable to squash the terrible violence that comes when there is little or no self-discipline within the majority of a nation, and so they simply tried to take the guns away to stop the violent crime.

Unfortunately, all the law-abiding citizens complied, but the bad guys did not. And so, from 1994, violent crime in South Africa has steadily increased. People have not turned to the government for protection because the government has not shown signs of competence in this arena. Instead, people have turned to private protection companies and gated communities to take care of each other and keep the bad guys out. They have had to take responsibility for protecting themselves.

South Africa currently rates No. 1 worldwide for gun homicides and No. 1 in assaults, according to the CIA. So things are not getting better despite the government’s efforts to ban private gun ownership. The bad guys now have more soft targets to prey upon.

I have enjoyed, as I had hoped, a wonderful life in the USA. I have lived in a community for more than 20 years where there is much peace. Violent crime is not a big issue here in Provo, Utah.

One thing that I noticed when I arrived in America was that for some unknown reason the people here had set up soft targets for cowards to attack at any moment they desired. I am speaking of the rule where no firearms are permitted on school properties.

This is something I still cannot comprehend and am trying to understand why anyone would want to create a soft target where innocent people cannot be protected. Any fool who wants to do something crazy now knows that he has a guaranteed soft target and can go in anytime to do terrible things.

Our schools have become “no judgment zones.” They outlaw all kinds of innocuous things because somebody, somewhere, might cause a problem, and the punishment for the students is draconian. After that, they apply the same rules to the adults in the area…..

It makes sense for a school to be a “gun-free zone” as far as the underage students are concerned. Adults, particularly those responsible for the safety of those students, are a different matter. There are people who fail to make the distinction.

History is something American Liberal Communists hate – and why they always try to re-write it.

Welcome to the new America the land of unknown possibilities. Where your not guaranteed safety anymore then you are guaranteed a job. Where your taxes are paid for government hand outs and enjoyment of the very people you have not elected but to the people that have rigged the ballots that you pay for. Welcome to the country that once was the strongest nation on earth, the richest of all, the fairest among many and most safest to raise your family. This my welcoming citizen is no longer the nation you have escaped to in hope of fleeing your own sanity.

We now sit on a cliff of uncertainty. The cliff that awaits is far serious then anyone had every imagined. We await this disaster and pray that some good news comes from the people that are determined to take us over it. When you sit and wait and watch in horror, your rights that were given to you by your creator have been taken away each and every day for the greed and corruption of the few. We wonder how did we get to this place. We can watch with discontent, even hatred, but the playing field is never again to be leveled. Their goal was and has always been to take from the poor and keep the rich in the comfort they have desired. They will continue their rule and cause chos over this nation, ban the very weapons that protect us, for if they allow us to keep them they know the time is ripe and the people will rise. The country is awakened and they now know that this is not the country they have come to love. They know now that the very people they entrust are the very people that want to destroy all they have worked for and take from them to give to those that are undeserving. Their time, is on the cliff and they too are cliff hangers. They know that they are hanging on for dear life and without confiscation they may just fall off.

I watch as so many wrongs have been done to the citizens of this nation. Their rights stripped. They want to strip their last right to bear their only protection from the bad guys. Leaving them sitting ducks. This cannot happen at any cost. When the ones that right the laws, the ones that call for disarm take the stand and disarm them selves and all their body arms that protect them it is then we as a nation can talk. Its not until these hypocrites do as I say, not as I do take the lead and lead by example will anyone, any longer take what they say,or write as any given truth, or law, follow them. Their laws have been infringement on this nation to better their own circle of people. It has only restricted the rest. They have come to an abyss, and lost the respect of a once great nation of people. How sad that is. Peace to all. May all find peace.

Awesome piece of writing. Why do our leaders not listen to the ones who know?

Great article and a great point: “Historically, Americans have always participated in their own security, but that ethic has faded as more people turn to the government to protect them.”

This is what more gun laws accomplish, the same thing that massive government welfare does – force the people to depend upon ‘The King’. We stop being citizens and become ‘subjects’.

The BILL OF RIGHTS is not something that the government “gives” American citizens – rather it is an acknowledgement of the RIGHTS that the citizen already has, given him by his Creator. People have a right to protect themselves and a right to possess the means with which to protect themselves. If Americans become the PROPERTY of the government then they forfeit their right to freedom and independence. Some people want slavery –

Mexico is another good example. Almost impossible for law-abiding citizens to own a gun, but cartel thugs have no problem getting guns (from Eric Holder et al) — and the murder rates in some areas are through the roof.

Bad guys and crazies WILL get the guns they need to do their evil deeds. Gov’t controls just create a lucrative new black market — and it won’t be the good guys running it.

It should not be so surprising that Liberals would allow there to be soft targets in America. Here is another one: Why are Liberals outraged that Arizonians should want to control the insane and enormous influx of illegal immigrants into their state, many of whom are drug smugglers and/or other kinds of criminals.

America’s security and safety are of no consequence as far as Liberals are concerned, if taking appropriate measures are in contradiction to Liberal ideology and sensitivities.

Is it any wonder lots of people think Liberals hate America or are traitors?

Hats off to MR Jakins for a very insightful article.

Truth is Obama wants to put American citizens at risk and to put their lives in danger. Any fool can see that.

He works to destroy the United States of America and make it a Third World hellhole. He works for a new world order as is evident in his handling of the United Nations.

For that reason, he works to create soft targets that will put more American lives at risk.

He is really quite transparent like all Progressives. There is nothing liberal about any of them. They work to take our freedoms and enslave us under the guise of governing us.
