We are headed towards an “unraveling of civilization”.

That’s a sobering statement.  And timely, since the terms “fiscal cliff”, “looming disaster”, and “Greece” have become castrated terms no longer synonymous with catastrophe and suffering.  In today’s Townhall article, Mona Charen gives us a fresh descriptor to inspire fear and awareness for where Obama and congress are leading our country.  And it’s chilling.

The incomparable Walter Russell Mead, writing in the American Interest, offered a glimpse into the coming dystopia:

“Things are getting worse in San Bernardino. The city filed for bankruptcy earlier this year, but its financial situation has continued to deteriorate. And now with what promises to be a heated court battle over payments to the state pension fund in the offing, further cuts are likely.

“Things are getting so bad that at a recent city council meeting, the city attorney advised residents to ‘lock their doors and load their guns’ because the city could no longer afford to keep up a strong enough police force.

Consider also this Reuters story from Greece:

“For hours the leader of the Greek journalists’ social security fund had been chairing a meeting about disastrous losses on retirement savings caused by the country’s economic collapse. ‘She tried to present herself as the fund’s savior and asked (members) to double contributions to 6 percent of salaries,’ said one of those present that night at the Titania hotel. Spanopoulou, 58, did not succeed.

“When she rose to leave around midnight, enraged fund members first swore, then waded in punching, kicking and tearing at her clothes, according to witnesses. A bodyguard managed to bustle her out of the room, but another group caught her just outside the hotel and gave her a second beating. She spent the night in hospital.

“It was a brutal sign of the fury many Greeks feel at the way the country’s debt crisis has dashed hopes of a comfortable old age. Greece’s pension funds – patchily run in the first place, say unionists and some politicians – have been savaged by austerity and the terms of the international bailout keeping the country afloat.”

When governments cannot pay their current employees because they’ve gone broke paying pensions to previous employees (among other obligations), you don’t get a “fiscal cliff,” or even a bad recession. You get the unraveling of civilization.

The Republicans are attempting to divert the nation — not from the “fiscal cliff” but from something much worse. If government debt is not controlled by spending cuts (tax increases on the rich make scarcely a dent), the U.S. is headed for drastic economic decline. Interest rates will rise to attract wary international investors. Rising interest rates will in turn increase our debt service burden, while a diminished private sector will provide less and less tax revenue. The combination of spiraling debt service and entitlement spending will quickly leave no funds for any other purpose.

That’s when it becomes Mad Max. That’s what the negotiations are about.

On some level the nation knows this.  Further down Free Republic is an article, “The Post Election Public Mood: It’s About To Hit The Fan”.  In it, the writer points out the new wave of best sellers on Amazon and its implications for how the public mood has shifted.

Well, before the November election, books about President Obama and about political theory in general were flying off the shelves. But now, checking the same bestseller lists that used to show those books doing well, it is plain that the mood has shifted. Those sorts of books have been supplanted and upstaged to a large degree. And the genre or theme that has replaced them is [insert drumroll here] Disaster Preparedness.

When our mainstream journalists are portending the “unraveling of civilization” with an outcome of “Mad Max”, and the national pastime has become learning how to store and sanitize water, something is wrong.  Very wrong.

  1. Greg & Teach: I’m with ya’. But developing relationships that can be trusted takes time. Don’t know if we have time, but banding together is important.

    Everyone should do what they can, and realize there’s good and bad people out there who will be desperate. If you have means, use them to educate and get set up. Prepare for no jobs, no food, no services (including water), no freedom of travel, no medical care, etc. etc. That’s the worse case, but there are levels in-between that can be as bad.

    O is determined to be a Dick-tater, so it will be a long situation before enough Americans wake up to do something about it, and the old guard (now O and company) will have to have gone the way of all human beings before it happens. It will be his successors (probably publishing photos of themselves on magical unicorns like the NK guy) that those who are young enough to do something about it will be doing something about if they want their freedom back.

    Meanwhile the govt will crush all opposition with police/military force and a civilian army of brownshirts and informants. This site is no doubt monitored and isps recorded.

When a tall skinny black man with a brilliant smile and absolutely no verifiable history of any kind including his own place of birth, came out of nowhere like a pied piper with soothing siren songs of hope and change, became an object of worship by the masses who flocked to him and cried at the very sight of him, and he was elevated by his followers to the status of a Messiah and a Cult of Personality formed around him which included virtually ALL media outlets who are supposed to dig into his background and inform us all about who this man was instead of unabashedly shilling for him, THAT’S WHEN I STARTED making preparations for a doomsday scenario.

  4. I’m all for being prepared- we all should, and I am to decent degree. However, it sounds like you guys think this will be worse than the Great Depression? Complete breakdown of society? Don’t get me wrong, I’m very concerned, and do believe things can get pretty rough, but I’m not sure we’ll have a total breakdown- and I certainly hope not. I think it’ll be more like Argentina’s collapse in 1999- a long, bad economic period, but not complete societal breakdown.

  6. As I have said before. Last month 48 percent of the population that pays 80% of the taxes and owns 90% of the guns were told that their opinions do not matter. Now the people who already pay the most are being told to pay more while being given less say about what it done with the money. I do not believe this will stand. Were I liberal politician, celebrity or “news” commentator I would be worried. The meek do not inherit the earth, they become food for the strong.

    One thing about Argentina – their population is probably somewhat homogeneous compared to ours. With the tribalism that’s been encouraged around these parts (especially lately), there’s more of a chance that unrest with ethnic underpinnings will occur.

  8. When the takers out populate the doers you know things are real bad….Its going to get really bad when takers can’t find any doers to take from anymore…..If you live in cities find relatives or friends who live in rural areas make some kind plan if need be….

  10. For those concerned about prepping on a low budget. There is a 99 cent ebook at Amazon called: “Poverty Prepping:How to Stock Up for tomorrow when you can’t afford to eat today”.

    The system can not be sustained with this level of spending and debt. When Obama supporters finally realize there’s no more for them to take is when it hits the fan. I’m hoping we have at least till the end of 2013.

  13. Alternative Minimum Tax (that usually hits the wealthy) will hit individuals with income as low as $33K or so in 2013

    It depends more on your deductions than your income, but $33K sounds too low to be hit by AMT.

    We tried marching on the “Palace” when the ObamaCare bill was about to be passed and we even went so far as to crowd into the halls of Congress and the offices of our representatives and look what it got us! Nancy Pelosi marched right through the middle of us and got the big gavel and marched right through us again and into the Congressional chambers and gaveled the bill passed! She had no fear because she knew if anyone lifted a finger to “beat” her, like she needs so very badly, the cops would have open fired on us and the point is, we all want to go back to the comfort of our upside down homes at night.

    Look at the demonstrations and riots in the Middle East. Does it look like those people are afraid of the cops? Does it look like they want to be home in time for supper? Does it look like their representatives would have the guts to march right through the middle of the demostrator’s, and I may add, take their lives in their own hands.

    No, Ghost, American’s have a long way to go before we are ready to take the kinds of steps that even the Greeks take in order to put the fear of God into their government officials. We have to start right in our own cities, and maybe even our own neighborhoods and begin to throw out the illegal Mexican aliens we know are living thirty to a room down the street, and when the cops show up attack them until they learn the hard way to leave us the hell alone. Don’t you know that America is a Fascist Police State already and has been since the late 70’s? We are clamped down in our own homes without the guts it’s gonig to take to act on our Constitutional Right to “Remove” those in our government by force and the Constitution says, “Replace” them with a Constitutional form of government.

    Our forefathers left us with the one single right that it would take to be able to save ourselves if things were allowed to get so bad that we lost control over our own elected officials, and in this case the President himself. Obama should not have been allowed to have been even a candidate to run for President because of his background as a terrorist organization supporter, and being a member of the Communist Party, which he joined when he ran for city councilmen in South Chicago in the 90’s. He is a Communist and what he is doing right now is overthrowing our government from within, just like Krueschev promised the Communist would do back in the middle 60’s while banging his shoe on the table at the U.N..

    Are we ready to take up our guns and drive to Washington and do the same thing we did when the Tea Party marched on Washington trying to stop the Democrats from “urinating” on our Constitution? If we’re not ready to do without our comfortable lives and make the sacrifices our forefather’s did, then we aren’t ready to change our country back to a nation where homosexuals will be put back in the closets, and Blacks will be told to get in line with everyone else, and our schools will have prayer put back into the lives of our children!

    So Ghost, where are we with all that?

    The Egyptians today don’t have any of this. Our Heritage DEMANDS that we take Action.

    1) States Rise to Re-Assert their Rights, to UNDO National Tyranny. The States created the National Government and can remake it. It is a Constitutional Safeguard.

  17. Ghost agree with you totally. It is always hard to predict ‘the straw that breaks the camel’s back’ but I think we are getting close. The Obamites hate our guts as witnessed by their words and actions. How do you work with or reason with people like this. At some point you say what’s the point. Hopefully there can be a relatively peaceful parting but that is not the lesson of history.

  18. This is what the American people voted for and what Obama has a mandate to fulfill. You write the article as if we should try to avoid the people’s will. Policies “in the best interests of the country” are a quaint memory but have no relevence today. There is no point discussing such. The only relevent questions have to do with what demographic benefits and does that group support the democratic party.

    I have already been writting today that people from the various states contact their state representatives and remind them that they passed law, either in the recent past, or recently as of the passing of ObamaCare, that they stand on the 10th Amendment that any law passed by the government become such a burden economically that the particular states cannot sustain that burden have the right to reject that law and tell the government to take a hike. Well, Louisiana was one of those states that told the Obama administration they were not going to enforce ObamaCare upon this state, any of it’s taxes, nor anything else of the laws be they economic or regulatory that would overburden this state.

    Well, the states had better remind themselves of the law(s) they passed to stand against the government because that may be the only way to stem any civil disobedience the people may have to act on in order to protect our freedom and liberty! Susceed from the Union? Well if it may get to that, or something like it may be the only other way we have to protect our sovereignty until that time that we can get rid of the Communists, Socialists, liberals, or whatever anti-American people who voted for Obama and his ilk, and ban Communism in all it’s forms from this land.
