450 Teachers Apply for 24 Spots in a Free Ohio Firearms Training

Don’t tell Senator Feinstein.
More than 450 teachers and other school employees applied for 24 spots in a free Ohio firearms training program.
The Columbus Dispatch reported, via Free Republic:

More than 450 teachers and other school employees from around Ohio have applied for 24 spots in a free firearms-training program being offered by the Buckeye Firearms Association.

“We’re pleasantly surprised, but it’s not shocking,” Ken Hanson, legal chairman for the association, said today of the response since the group began taking applications on its website 10 days ago. “The demand has been there for quite some time.”

The issue of arming school employees to protect students has been “on the radar” of school boards in Ohio for several years, he said, but the organization decided to launch its training program after the Dec. 14 shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., where a gunman killed 20 children and six adults.

“That was the breaking point,” he said. “We decided it’s time to quit talking about it and move forward.”

maybe more of the shops will open up spots.

Here was my issue: as a woman I was intimidated and then I found out that there was a woman & firearms class taught by a (off duty) sherriff every week at the local gun store.

I decided to pay the small fee and that’s when I purchased my first small firearm for self protection.

    I WAS 21!
I’m much older now but I still practice on the woman only days at the range. Its just habit and (sorry) comforting. It reminds me of my dad trying to teach me how to drive and that just made every small infraction worse. This is oversighted by a female (off duty) police officer. So if there are any questions about size and stance or general situations, its a less intimidating environment than when the male officers are there telling me my stance is off or the reason my aim is a hair out of the silhouette. On the other hand? Depends on the day the person is having – if the female officer has had a bad day and can’t get a replacement for the training session? Don’t make jokes.

More ranges and more training are needed.
    I agree.
This guy is doing it for free?
    Nice of him.
A SMALL fee won’t deter the other 426 people.

I know a a female teacher who has been trying to get her CCW and is having issues getting her gun. Every time she goes into the gun shop NICS is down. He hubby, also a teacher, has his already, but Perry just changed it so Texas teachers can carry, and she teaches 1st and 2nd graders. Needless to say, the shooting hit home and hearing of the teacher who lied about where her kids were and the principle who had to try and stop and armed man by throwing herself at him and being a bullet sponge she decided she’d much rather do something other than wait to be killed..

Obama and all the other gun grabbers are going to have an absolute hissy fit as teachers start arming themselves. Personally, I’ll be celebrating …

I was a horrible tragedy that happen and so were the other school shooting. But this is my thought, WHY THE HELL DID IT TAKE SO LONG. BECAUSE 20 CHILDREN AND 6 OTHERS ARE DEAD AND IT DIDN’T NEED TO BE THIS WAY.

    IT, NOT I

Here’s some facts that don’t seem relevant to Hoft or any of the current commenting section:

While most of those applying ( as no one has been accepted as of yet ) are teachers, the class will not accept anyone that has no prior firearms experience – and I doubt that just three days of training ( the hours within the training schedule are not mentioned, but I feel it’s safe to guess that just a few hours a day for three days isn’t going to put a 1st grade teacher within the same skill-set as a police officer with 10 years experience ) at $1000 per person is going to make anyone safer.

Local police already see this as a bad idea, as a fully qualified officer with field experience is more suited for this job, as no firearms will be present in the classroom.

This is great news. Hopefully it spreads like wildfire, because we can guess that Obama’s gestapo’s, are going to have another “False Flag”http://www.thesurvivalistblog.net/are-recent-mass-shooting-false-flag-events/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+PlanPrepareSurvive+%28%40TheSurvivalistBlog.net%29 slaughter in a “Gun Free Zone”ready to go,to have a reason to jam down Feinsten’s legislation down our Country’s throat. By the way if anyone doesn’t think the repub congressman in the repub controlled house are fully behind this Firearms control legislation they are sadly mistaken. We are watching the usual “Good Cop,Bad cop” routine where the repubs alway’s cave at the end. Even some of the incoming repub freshman congressman are waffling on their support of Our God Given Second Ammendment which they ran on to get electedhttp://hotair.com/headlines/archives/2012/12/28/incoming-gop-congressman-im-open-to-limited-gun-control/ .That means they were already contacted by Weepy Boehner and his Henchmen Cantor,McCarthy etal to make sure their votes are in the Bank for Feinstein’s legislation. This is a done deal between the repubs and dems as they are all “New World Order,One World Government”, lefties, working for their Rockefeller/Rotschild Bankster oligarch master’s.

The “Good thing” is,it will be the Final Betrayal from the repub party and will allow us to have no reason anymore to stop the formation of a Conservative Third Party to replace the repubs. The repubs will be in the same position as the ‘Whig’ Party, which the repubs replaced in the 1850’s,when the ‘Whig’ party became a mirror image of the dems prior to the start of the Civil War.

The other “Good” thing is, Our God Given Second Ammendment Right, is specifically designed so even When the repubs and dems signal their Final betrayal to the Citizen’s of The United States of America,by passing Feinstein’s nazi inspired Firearms confiscation legislation, we can alway’s say NO to it and Back it up with Force!

is the discussion for gun control clouding out any serious discussion of the state of mental healthcare in this country? another victim pushed off a subway platform by an apparently deranged woman. is it easier to address a sympton of a disease than the disease?

  • RealMc

    @ #12

Should they do nothing? No s4it a new learner won’t have the 10 years experience a LEO has….. and oh, is that the new standard (typical, move the goal post tactic) that a teacher should have 10 years law enforcement experience before they are allowed to defend themselves and their students?

No kidding that a few hours doesn’t equate to 10 years, it equates to 3 days.

The deterrent effect alone is worth years of experience. Statistics have proven that again and again. Just look at the difference in crime rates in anti-gun states versus pro-gun states.
Criminals and even mentally ill that are hell bent on killing have shown time and time again they go towards soft targets……

The moron in CT didn’t go in to a place where he knew he’d find resistance, he went after defenseless kids and teachers. Teachers don’t have to be victims unless the decision is left up to people like you.

You can’t possibly be as dense as you are projecting….right?

  • Walknot

So now even a cop without 10 years exp isn’t safe?

  • airon-later

    #15 and #16

Allow me to educate you both.

No, three days of just a few hours “training” do not equal a cop with 10 years field experience, nor to they even equal one year experience. The point which is abundantly clear, as you both most certainly know though you opt for ridiculous responses, that teachers with firearms in classes have no proven track record. Even those that have had CC licenses that put themselves into a position to stop a killer with a firearm ( semi-automatic or otherwise ) have more often than not been trained law-enforcement officials. The insistence that gun-regulation equals higher instences of violence is predicated on nothing more than false equivalencies and contorted research data which simply does not hold up under even the losest of scientific standards.

The fact is that the states with the most guns also see the highest number of crimes involving guns, and those with the least amount see the least number of crimes involving guns.

The question whether or not schools should or shouldn’t do anything to protect students is idiotic to begin with. We all know that students deserve protection, though those of us that accept, understand, and operate within the framework of results-based reality favor a comprehensive approach rather than that of just handing over a firearm to someone that may or may not use it wisely. This isn’t to say that the average teacher can’t operate a firearm, but it’s much easier to assume that this is a cure-all before a mass shooting happens, but that sort of rationalization doesn’t always hold up once the shooting starts. There are a multitude of variables to consider, and the Modern American Right openly and unapologetically refuses to accept this.

I agree with trained law enforcement standing guard outside the school is part of the path to better security, but a weapon ( loaded or not ) in a room full of children is not.

  • bobdog

#17 Airon-hater, reread what you wrote and educate yourself.

No experience? If that’s true, you should not have been taught to drive.

“The fact is” that cities that have the highest gun-related crime records are those that have outlawed guns – Chicago, New York, Los Angeles are three that are worth reminding you about. How you can draw any other conclusion is beyond most of us, because it is transparently true. You should research a little further and learn, because you sound like you’re new to this issue.

As for that crazy idea about protecting kids with police and trained security personnel, all those “gun free zone” signs you’ve planted all over the country haven’t had much effect, either. You think that banning “assault magazines” is going to change ANYTHING? Do you think the Constitution should be rewritten because 20% of Americans are hysterical? Is that all it takes? What if 40% of Americans decided that abortions should be illegal again? Or 55% of Americans decided we would rather take care of our own health care? Would that be OK with you?

  • Maria Dubăsari

    Lots of good gun info:

  • Finncrisp

When a drunk driver kills someone, there is no outcry for banning cars. There is an outcry for justice for the individual who drove drunk, and that steps be taken to keep that person from doing it again.

When a crazed person murders his mother to get guns and then uses them to kill innocents, we than want to disarm everyone? Making average citizens defenseless is assuring it will happen again and again.

I applaud the people that signed up for instruction. Their introduction to the safe use of firearms will undoutedly be part of an ongoing program of improving their skills.

  • retire05

#17, airon-later, you really are winging it here, aren’t you? Let me give you the benefit of my research.

According to the most recent FBI stats, California, a state with tight gun control laws, has twice the number of murders by firearms than Texas, a state considered by the Brady Institute to have lax gun control laws. How do you account for that when California does not have twice the population of Texas?

Also, the number of murders committed by guns listed as “rifles, shotguns and others” is smaller than the number of murders committed by “knives, others (which would include even baseball bats, hammers, axes, etc) and fists, hands, feet. How do you account for that if it is only guns killing people?

Another thing you need to account for: the number of firearm murders has been steadily going down for five years although the number of privately owned firearms has skyrocketed. If greater gun ownership by law abiding citizens (who are the only people gun laws apply to since they are the only ones who respect the laws) means greater firearm murders, then you have to be able to give a reason why the U.S. murder rate is decreasing.

And here is a little tidbit that the gun grabbing left will never discuss:

According to a 2007 USA Today report:

Baltimore – 91% of murder victims this year had criminal records, up from 74% a decade ago

Philadelphia – 75% of murder victims this year had criminal records, up from 71% in 2005

Milwaukee – a 39% spike in murder in 2005 lead the local leaders to look at the criminal history of the murder victims. They found that in the past two years (2006-2007) 77% of the murder victims had criminal arrest records with an average of nearly 12 arrests each.

Newark, N.J. – of murder victims in the first six months of 2007, almost 85% of them had criminal records, on par with 2005, but up from 2006.

Gangbangers killing gangbangers who, believe me, did not obtain their weapons legally.

So, until Dianne Feinstein gives up her own personal CCW permit, because she no longer feels the need to have it for her own protections, she needs to leave mine alone. When the state/federal governments finally get illegal guns out of the hands of the gangbangers and other criminals, like the man who just shot four firefighters and killed two of them, who was a convicted felon not legally allowed to own firearms, leave mine alone.

Airon, you gun grabbers are pathetic. More people are killed with knives and blunt instruments in America EVERY YEAR. Do you care about those knives, hammers, or baseball bats? No, you only seem to care about guns. In fact, you’re obsessed with them. I wonder why that is?

Every American needs to ask themselves that question before they even consider caving in to the demands of people like you. Anyone with an ounce of sense knows it’s no coincidence that the people like you who are constantly screaming for more gun control are the very same people who support installing a tyrannical, oppressive progressive Socialist government in America. You’d like nothing better to disarm your opposition and send them into a gun fight with a knife, wouldn’t you?

I have news for you airon. It isn’t going to happen. You can pass all the laws you want, but patriotic Americans aren’t going to surrender their firearms willingly. They know that the founders were right … their firearms are the only thing that stand between them and people like you.

How do you know that any of those 450 teachers have no firearms experience?

  • Highlander

Maria, in the sidebar of the blog you referenced, the author specifically states:

“Safe storage, better gun design, gun safety training are just some of the measures that could have prevented these tragedies…”

No mention of gun control, or gun bans. I wonder why that is? Could it be that the author is actually concerned with improving gun safety, rather than stripping us of our Second Amendment rights and leaving us at the mercy of tyrants and criminals?

Yeah, and what are the odds that the State Teachers Union will track down every last one of the 450 applicants and make their lives and their jobs a living hell? The personal responsibility and discipline needed to carry does not fit the Progressive / Union mantra of give us your money and we will take care of you. Hope someone tracks this…

Ah, the “knives and hammers and blah blah blah” defense.

Over-simplification and poor attempts to divert attention from reality do not serve you and your blindly ideological fellows well. Your knee-jerk, twitchy, responses only serve to make it easier for people like Adam Lanza to obtain firearms that are designed and manufactured to kill another human.

And I would ask what makes you so sure that all 450 do have prior experience? I was quoting the article that was linked. Apparently you take issue with the facts relevant to the topic at hand.

  • Blacque Jacques Shellacque

And I would ask what makes you so sure that all 450 do have prior experience?

Where did I say they did? YOU are the one basically insinuating none of them have any firearms experience, so YOU prove it.

  • Highlander

Blaque, airhead can’t prove anything, nor does he want to. He’s all about spreading lies and disinformation … when presented with facts, he just changes the subject and throws another piece of left-wing propaganda out there, hoping it will stick. It’s pointless to engage people like that. Our efforts are far better spent readying ourselves to defeat them.

  • Highlander

Airhead, it isn’t an OVER SIMPLIFICATION to state FACTS, and the FACT is, far more people are killed by stabbings and blunt trauma injuries every year. In reality, the number of gun deaths is REMARKABLY low considering how many guns are in circulation in America. Based on the death statistics, it’s pretty clear that guns are the least of our worries. You have a better chance of being killed mowing your lawn or driving to the store.

And, once again, you distort the truth when you state that firearms “are designed and manufactured to kill another human”. Firearms are designed and manufactured to accurately and reliably deliver a projectile. Period. They are nothing but tools, and just like a hammer, the person who picks the tool up is responsible for using it safely and properly. If they CHOOSE to take a human life with it, then they and they alone are responsible for that decision. You don’t blame the car when a drunk driver kills your kid do you?

Come on … who do you think you’re fooling? We know what your agenda is. Your faux concern for America’s gunshot victims is laughable. If you really cared about protecting people, then you would know that many more Americans’ lives are SAVED by firearms every year than lost …

  • Blacque Jacques Shellacque

In reality, the number of gun deaths is REMARKABLY low considering how many guns are in circulation in America.

A friend showed me his union “newspaper” where it railed against teachers with guns in the schools. Funny how all of a sudden the union is so concerned about the safety of the students, when its always been about the union’s power.
So a previous poster is quite right, that the teacher’s union will probably send the union thugs in to “educate” these teachers what the party line is and what the teachers are allowed to do and what they’re allowed to say.

  • airon-later

#29 No insiuation was put forward. This is purely your reactionary interpretation of a clear and accurate quote from the article. And, based on the very nature of the Modern American Right as it relates to the ownership and purchase of firearms ( especially the semi-automatic rifles like the AR-15 – which can easily be fired in “full auto” without any modification ) I see that portion of the article as completely within the realm of relevancy. Also, I find it quite telling that you – and many like you – never feel that you have to back up your statements, as you favor the tactic of deflection and insistence that any opposing party should prove themselves. Accountability within your ideological existence is of no matter to you. It’s quite sad actually.

#30 The subject was always in the forefront of my comments. It is you and several others that have this drooling desire to remove firearms from the equation entirely.

#31 The firearm(s) in question – as you most likely know – that ARE IN FACT designed an manufactured to kill another human are the ones like Adam Lanza used at Sandy Hook. I grew up in a family of hunters and NONE of them used or currently use anything remotely like an AR-15 Bushmaster to take down a deer, an elk, or even a coyote. And while you opt for the techically purist definition of what a firearm is, you again soft-peddle the issue at hand. Your insistence that you “know” my agenda – which I find quite comical, and just a shade conspiratorial – or that you believe I have no concern for those that were needlessly slaughtered flies in the face of anything remotely realistic, as you and your fellow mouth-agape compatriots follow the approach of essentially flooding the market with guns, consequences be damned.

  • Lindy

The problem in America is that guns, even military guns, can be so easily obtained that even people with mental and psychological problems can buy them or will have one in their home at their disposal. I believe I am looking at the big picture and what I see is out of control gun sales in America and the sooner an embargo is decreed on the owning of them and the sale of them the better. I would hate to live in a country where I couldn’t venture out without carrying a gun or I would be putting myself in danger because everyone else has one. The thought of having guns on school premises defies belief, ARE YOU ALL MAD?. ‘Defend my right to hold a gun’ ‘Lets get some guns and have some fun.’ I give up!! I will never understand the pro gun mentality.
