450 Teachers Apply for 24 Spots in a Free Ohio Firearms Training

Don’t tell Senator Feinstein.
More than 450 teachers and other school employees applied for 24 spots in a free Ohio firearms training program.
The Columbus Dispatch reported, via Free Republic:

More than 450 teachers and other school employees from around Ohio have applied for 24 spots in a free firearms-training program being offered by the Buckeye Firearms Association.

“We’re pleasantly surprised, but it’s not shocking,” Ken Hanson, legal chairman for the association, said today of the response since the group began taking applications on its website 10 days ago. “The demand has been there for quite some time.”

The issue of arming school employees to protect students has been “on the radar” of school boards in Ohio for several years, he said, but the organization decided to launch its training program after the Dec. 14 shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., where a gunman killed 20 children and six adults.

“That was the breaking point,” he said. “We decided it’s time to quit talking about it and move forward.”

maybe more of the shops will open up spots.

Here was my issue: as a woman I was intimidated and then I found out that there was a woman & firearms class taught by a (off duty) sherriff every week at the local gun store.

I decided to pay the small fee and that’s when I purchased my first small firearm for self protection.

    I WAS 21!
I’m much older now but I still practice on the woman only days at the range. Its just habit and (sorry) comforting. It reminds me of my dad trying to teach me how to drive and that just made every small infraction worse. This is oversighted by a female (off duty) police officer. So if there are any questions about size and stance or general situations, its a less intimidating environment than when the male officers are there telling me my stance is off or the reason my aim is a hair out of the silhouette. On the other hand? Depends on the day the person is having – if the female officer has had a bad day and can’t get a replacement for the training session? Don’t make jokes.

More ranges and more training are needed.
    I agree.
This guy is doing it for free?
    Nice of him.
A SMALL fee won’t deter the other 426 people.

I know a a female teacher who has been trying to get her CCW and is having issues getting her gun. Every time she goes into the gun shop NICS is down. He hubby, also a teacher, has his already, but Perry just changed it so Texas teachers can carry, and she teaches 1st and 2nd graders. Needless to say, the shooting hit home and hearing of the teacher who lied about where her kids were and the principle who had to try and stop and armed man by throwing herself at him and being a bullet sponge she decided she’d much rather do something other than wait to be killed..

Obama and all the other gun grabbers are going to have an absolute hissy fit as teachers start arming themselves. Personally, I’ll be celebrating …

I was a horrible tragedy that happen and so were the other school shooting. But this is my thought, WHY THE HELL DID IT TAKE SO LONG. BECAUSE 20 CHILDREN AND 6 OTHERS ARE DEAD AND IT DIDN’T NEED TO BE THIS WAY.

Here’s some facts that don’t seem relevant to Hoft or any of the current commenting section:

While most of those applying ( as no one has been accepted as of yet ) are teachers, the class will not accept anyone that has no prior firearms experience – and I doubt that just three days of training ( the hours within the training schedule are not mentioned, but I feel it’s safe to guess that just a few hours a day for three days isn’t going to put a 1st grade teacher within the same skill-set as a police officer with 10 years experience ) at $1000 per person is going to make anyone safer.

Local police already see this as a bad idea, as a fully qualified officer with field experience is more suited for this job, as no firearms will be present in the classroom.

This is great news. Hopefully it spreads like wildfire, because we can guess that Obama’s gestapo’s, are going to have another “False Flag”http://www.thesurvivalistblog.net/are-recent-mass-shooting-false-flag-events/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+PlanPrepareSurvive+%28%40TheSurvivalistBlog.net%29 slaughter in a “Gun Free Zone”ready to go,to have a reason to jam down Feinsten’s legislation down our Country’s throat. By the way if anyone doesn’t think the repub congressman in the repub controlled house are fully behind this Firearms control legislation they are sadly mistaken. We are watching the usual “Good Cop,Bad cop” routine where the repubs alway’s cave at the end. Even some of the incoming repub freshman congressman are waffling on their support of Our God Given Second Ammendment which they ran on to get electedhttp://hotair.com/headlines/archives/2012/12/28/incoming-gop-congressman-im-open-to-limited-gun-control/ .That means they were already contacted by Weepy Boehner and his Henchmen Cantor,McCarthy etal to make sure their votes are in the Bank for Feinstein’s legislation. This is a done deal between the repubs and dems as they are all “New World Order,One World Government”, lefties, working for their Rockefeller/Rotschild Bankster oligarch master’s.

The “Good thing” is,it will be the Final Betrayal from the repub party and will allow us to have no reason anymore to stop the formation of a Conservative Third Party to replace the repubs. The repubs will be in the same position as the ‘Whig’ Party, which the repubs replaced in the 1850’s,when the ‘Whig’ party became a mirror image of the dems prior to the start of the Civil War.

The other “Good” thing is, Our God Given Second Ammendment Right, is specifically designed so even When the repubs and dems signal their Final betrayal to the Citizen’s of The United States of America,by passing Feinstein’s nazi inspired Firearms confiscation legislation, we can alway’s say NO to it and Back it up with Force!

is the discussion for gun control clouding out any serious discussion of the state of mental healthcare in this country? another victim pushed off a subway platform by an apparently deranged woman. is it easier to address a sympton of a disease than the disease?

    @ #12

Should they do nothing? No s4it a new learner won’t have the 10 years experience a LEO has….. and oh, is that the new standard (typical, move the goal post tactic) that a teacher should have 10 years law enforcement experience before they are allowed to defend themselves and their students?

No kidding that a few hours doesn’t equate to 10 years, it equates to 3 days.

The deterrent effect alone is worth years of experience. Statistics have proven that again and again. Just look at the difference in crime rates in anti-gun states versus pro-gun states.
Criminals and even mentally ill that are hell bent on killing have shown time and time again they go towards soft targets……

The moron in CT didn’t go in to a place where he knew he’d find resistance, he went after defenseless kids and teachers. Teachers don’t have to be victims unless the decision is left up to people like you.

You can’t possibly be as dense as you are projecting….right?

So now even a cop without 10 years exp isn’t safe?

    #15 and #16

Allow me to educate you both.

No, three days of just a few hours “training” do not equal a cop with 10 years field experience, nor to they even equal one year experience. The point which is abundantly clear, as you both most certainly know though you opt for ridiculous responses, that teachers with firearms in classes have no proven track record. Even those that have had CC licenses that put themselves into a position to stop a killer with a firearm ( semi-automatic or otherwise ) have more often than not been trained law-enforcement officials. The insistence that gun-regulation equals higher instences of violence is predicated on nothing more than false equivalencies and contorted research data which simply does not hold up under even the losest of scientific standards.

The fact is that the states with the most guns also see the highest number of crimes involving guns, and those with the least amount see the least number of crimes involving guns.

The question whether or not schools should or shouldn’t do anything to protect students is idiotic to begin with. We all know that students deserve protection, though those of us that accept, understand, and operate within the framework of results-based reality favor a comprehensive approach rather than that of just handing over a firearm to someone that may or may not use it wisely. This isn’t to say that the average teacher can’t operate a firearm, but it’s much easier to assume that this is a cure-all before a mass shooting happens, but that sort of rationalization doesn’t always hold up once the shooting starts. There are a multitude of variables to consider, and the Modern American Right openly and unapologetically refuses to accept this.

I agree with trained law enforcement standing guard outside the school is part of the path to better security, but a weapon ( loaded or not ) in a room full of children is not.

#17 Airon-hater, reread what you wrote and educate yourself.

No experience? If that’s true, you should not have been taught to drive.

“The fact is” that cities that have the highest gun-related crime records are those that have outlawed guns – Chicago, New York, Los Angeles are three that are worth reminding you about. How you can draw any other conclusion is beyond most of us, because it is transparently true. You should research a little further and learn, because you sound like you’re new to this issue.

As for that crazy idea about protecting kids with police and trained security personnel, all those “gun free zone” signs you’ve planted all over the country haven’t had much effect, either. You think that banning “assault magazines” is going to change ANYTHING? Do you think the Constitution should be rewritten because 20% of Americans are hysterical? Is that all it takes? What if 40% of Americans decided that abortions should be illegal again? Or 55% of Americans decided we would rather take care of our own health care? Would that be OK with you?

    Lots of good gun info:

When a drunk driver kills someone, there is no outcry for banning cars. There is an outcry for justice for the individual who drove drunk, and that steps be taken to keep that person from doing it again.

When a crazed person murders his mother to get guns and then uses them to kill innocents, we than want to disarm everyone? Making average citizens defenseless is assuring it will happen again and again.

I applaud the people that signed up for instruction. Their introduction to the safe use of firearms will undoutedly be part of an ongoing program of improving their skills.
