Syrian activists say jihadist fighters linked to al-Qaeda fought with rebels to capture a Syrian air defense base.
The jihadists posted video online following the capture of the missile base.

Videos posted online Friday, apparently shot inside air defense base near Aleppo, show fighters linked to al-Qaeda participating in overnight battle, inspecting lines of large missiles.
Anti-regime activists say jihadist fighters linked to al-Qaeda fought with rebels to capture a Syrian military air defense base near Aleppo.
Videos posted online Friday apparently shot inside the base say Jabhat al-Nusra participated in the overnight battle for the base. The videos show fighters inspecting lines of large missiles.
Two Aleppo-based activists and Rami Abdul-Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, also say Jabhat al-Nusra fought in the battle.
The base’s capture is sure to fuel fears that Islamic extremists are playing a greater role after nearly 19 months of unrest in Syria. Western powers cite their presence as a reason not to arm the rebels.
Syrian opposition activists estimate more than 32,000 people have been killed since March 2011 when the uprising against President Bashar Assad’s regime began.
Clashes were also taking place Friday at a military barracks close to Maarat al-Nuaman, a town on the main highway to the northwestern city of Aleppo which was seized by rebel forces earlier this week.

Looks to me like SAM 5s or possibly SAM 9s. Viet Nam era triple A, (anti aircraft). If so, good luck teaching the goat herders and rug merchants to operate the fire control radar. That’s going to take a while, especially under fire. I’d love to hear from anybody who disagrees with my assessment and has a more specialized knowledge about this ordinance. It’s been a long time since I paid any attention to com bloc triple A.

Countries are worried about the huge chemical arsenal Assad has piled up in Syria, courtesy in large part to Saddam Hussein. We’ve always made the hard decisions, and when it is them or us, we will have to make that decision. Obama will never make that hard decision in favour of America and her allies; Obama has said he will side with the muslims….and he will.

Geez, if only the Obama administration didn’t support al-Qaeda in Syria (FSA), perhaps our fighters could take all those missles out, now, immediately, while they are in the open.

Those look like they are Russian S-75/SA-2 Guideline SAMs or a close variant. Either that or they’re Chinese HQ-1/HQ-2 SAMs — which is very much highly unlikely — especially since Assad and Putin are such BFF’s. The video is kind of blurry and grainy and doesn’t show much but it does look like it’s the typical Russian SAM launch site configuration too. It is a very effective and long lived SAM system that has a very far reaching range — if you’re combating a country with very little modern hardware capability that is. They’re fairly easily taken out with modern anti-radar targeting weapon systems.
