The Cardinals-Braves game was halted tonight after Atlanta fans started chucking bottles and debris on the field following a controversial call.

Sports Illustrated reported:

The NL wild-card playoff game at Turner Field has been halted after Atlanta fans littered the field with trash over a disputed infield fly call.

Trailing 6-3 in the eighth inning, the Braves appeared to catch a break when a fly ball to short left field dropped between St. Louis shortstop Pete Kozma and left fielder Matt Holliday after a mix-up over who had it.

But just before the ball dropped, left field umpire Sam Holbrook signaled an automatic out because of the infield fly rule, designed to prevent a team from intentionally dropping a popup in order to get extra outs with more than one runner on base.

Instead of Atlanta having the bases loaded with one out, Andrelton Simmons was called out.

Obviously, these were Braves fans and not Cardinal fans we’re dealing with here.

  1. Immature babies, no example for Adults but these are fans, don’t forget and you don’t mess with them.

  2. I don’t blame them. A ball isn’t caught and it’s an out? It’s called an infield fly, but it was halfway to the wall. I don’t know if the ump made the right call, but if he did, it still sucks…and I’m a Cards fan.

  3. I wonder how many of these idiot trash tossers thought that this was an expression of freedom of speech?

  4. I don’t blame them…. HORRID call that absolutely affected the game! A little fan passion, that’s all. Makes for a memorable moment. Too bad that Atlanta couldn’t overcome it.

  5. Personally, could this be more than just a wrong call? It just a game!

Throwing stuff all around the place and on the field, really. Crazy rules or bias, geesh, I am sick of that word.

  6. Bad call or not there is no reason to start throwing stuff. Chucking Bottles, come on!!

  7. A born and raised Cardinal fan. My parents are from New Athens,Il,hometown of Whitey Herzog. That was a bad call. No question. Still, grow up.

  8. Bad call…lucky for the rookie. Understandable that fans were upset, but throwing bottles etc is dangerous and bad sportsmanship. Chipper was not safe in the ninth inning, so it evens out in my book. Cardinal fan through and through here.

  9. The baseball gods gave us a make up call from 1985! ;-)

  10. A ball isn’t caught and it’s an out?

If the infield fly rule is in effect, as declared by the umpire, then yes.

  11. To ALL… those were NOT bottles… but aluminum ones.. MLB does not allow glass bottles in the stands. So, no one could really have been hurt… those things , unless full ( at $7/beer I’m sure they were all empties) wouldn’t really cause more than a symbolic effort to show extreme displeasure… Not defending… just clarifying what the fans did..
