In his Labor Day announcement today Barack Obama said that bargaining rights are the fundamental right of every American.
What is he talking about?
From the White House website:
I am committed to preserving the collective bargaining rights that helped build the greatest middle class the world has ever known. It is the fundamental right of every American to have a voice on the job, and a chance to negotiate for fair pay, safe working conditions, and a secure retirement. When we uphold these basic principles, our middle class grows and everybody prospers.
Since when is it the right of an employee to go and demand higher wages from their employer?
What nonsense.
You can tell this guy never worked in the private sector.

Well, it IS your “fundamental right” to go demand higher pay. And it is your employer’s “fundamental right” to tell you to pound sand.
I think what he is talking about (notice he is speaking to the AFL-CIO) is preserving the power of the unions. Unions, however, have no fundamental rights.

He’s a Democrat, at the very least. If Democrats could have their way, the Constitution would be bloated with all the “rights” they’ve concocted over the years, much like the federal government is bloated with bureaucrats.

Obama doesn’t even do the work of the presidency that we pay him very well to do. We do, after all, provide a half-million in salary plus free housing, meals, transportation, security and even an expense account.
George Bush showed up every single morning at 6:30 or so for his National Security Briefing – rain, shine, and on his birthday. He was not unusual by a very long shot.
This nincompoop doesn’t darken the door of the Oval Office until 930 am, is gone to lunch by noon and out on the golf course immediately afterwards. He has spent more hours golfing that he has even meeting with his cabinet or the jobs panel that HE created.
If he was CEO of any corporation in the world he would be SO long gone it would make his head spin.

When is the government going to respect the collective bargaining rights of the voters who win elections on the bargain to CUT SPENDING ? Every election is an opportunity for the collective to strike a bargain , but the minority losing side grubbing for more and more money does not want to abide by majority rule. They are not interested in ” bargaining ” collective or otherwise. They want government to keep pillaging assets from the private sector even if it violates your consent, your rights…even if it kills the entire economy and destroys the free world.

I agree, as far as he goes. People in a market for labor should be free to find the best bargain they can for their time, skills, talent, and application.
It is also a Constitutional right to associate with whom we will, which includes collective bargaining.
But NOBODY has a right to tell you that you must join a union to work. And no union has a right to commit property destruction or violence against others.
And NO organization is above the law. All unions should be held to he same laws as other organizations, including anti-trust laws, and laws against restraint of trade.
db commented:
Is this “bargaining right” an individual right, or may it only be exercised collectively via your union negotiator?
At first I thought he was trying to make a case for Right-To-Work laws.

Let me hasten to add…
Civil service protections are a special case. If you work in a government or quasi-government job, you are afforded special protections, and you surrender the right to bargain collectively, IMNHO.
Just as service members give up many civil rights to serve our nation.

Barry looks more deranged and angry every day. How can someone look at his mean, ugly face, filled with rage and hatred for America, and not want to get rid of him.
Seriously, he looks demonic…..it’s really scary. I can’t wait until he’s gone.

Rags,
In re #11 — very well said!!
In re #14 — our government can be a tyrannical employer, and if you fail to properly bow down to the appropriate departmental powers, you discover that those “special protections” that you think you have are not worth the paper they on which they were written unless you personally have the resources to take on the federal government in their own courts. As a Right-to-Work supporter, I still would not step into a position in government employment without a union card.
Ragspierre commented:
#16 A lot of people don’t get this, but FDR was AVIDLY against collective bargaining for government employees.
STILL, there were Federal employee unions of a sort. They just did not have the power to bargain collectively. They could…and I’m sure DID…represent members who were being treated wrongly. And I have no issues with that.
Again, free association is a natural right, IMNHO.

I concur with your well stated position. Your labor is a commodity to be bargained for wages. The operative word is “bargained”.

Ignorance ! His staff writes it, he does what he’s told and reads it. The staff, of which we know, is hardly conversant with normal life as normal people know it. But he is speaking before the union guys & he doesn’t want to make them angry. He may need them for their muscle on election day, and after.
