Pussy Riot Punk Band Members Protest Putin – Sentenced to 2 Years in Jail

Russian punk protest babes – Pussy Riot.

The all-girl Russian punk rock band “Pussy Riot” is gaining in popularity after they held an impromptu performance in Red Square taunting Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

Then they were detained.

Today the Pussy Riot was sentenced to two years in jail.
AFP reported:

A Moscow judge sentenced three members of the provocative punk band Pussy Riot to two years in prison each on hooliganism charges on Friday following a trial that has drawn international outrage as an emblem of Russia’s intolerance of dissent. The women — Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alekhina, and Yekaterina Samutsevich — remained calm after the judge announced the sentence. Someone in the courtroom shouted “Shame!”

The Guardian reports that their sentences are to begin on the day of their arrests (March 3: Tolokonnikova and Alekhina; March 16: Samutsevich).

The trial sparked a wave of protests around the world in support of the feminist rockers, who have been dubbed prisoners of conscience by international rights group. Hundreds of Pussy Riot supporters chanted “Russia without Putin!” amid a heavy police presence outside the courtroom, and several opposition leaders were detained.

The specific incident they were prosecuted for was “performing” their protest on the alter of St Basil’s Cathedral during a mass. They went over the line. Yes, the sentence is too much, but there is a time and place for protest.

Protesting is one thing, but their actions in St Basil’s would have gotten them arrested in the US too. While I support their protests of Putin, I deplore their specific actions. You don’t further your protest by abridging he religious freedoms of innocent bystanders.

Jim m, they are not protesting Putin exclusively, they are trying to call attention to the political alliance between the autocratic Russian government and the Russian Orthodox church.

Fascist Putin is propped up in large part by Russia’s ultra-conservative church. Hopefully understanding that can get all you GP readers to consider a few of their own political biases more thoroughly.

if such a performance would have taken place in a mosque they would have been beheaded on the spot …

And one girl of the Pussy Riot group is supposed to have taken part to this other “artistic performance ” : the theft of a chicken in a supermarket

If the Russian Orthodox Church supports this man, then it is not ultra-conservative… it is not even conservative. It is as ULTRA-LEFT as America’s superfun-rockband churches, and the majority of Catholic dioceses.

If some organization supports unlimited State Control — they are LEFT WING.

Get this through your skull, and into your mind:

communists, liberals, leftists, atheists: State Control over ALL.

Conservatives, Tea-Partiers, Christians: Limited government and freedom.

If the Russian Orthodox Church supports Putin, they are not CONSERVATIVE.

They are as left-wing as it can possibly get.

Like most of the Churches in America, and the entire world, at this point.
