Weird… Plane Flies Swastika Over New Jersey Beach in Effort to Rehabilitate Former Peace Symbol

Some nutty group flew a Swastika over a New Jersey beach this past weekend in an effort to rehabilitate the former peace symbol.

CBS Local reported:

The group behind the flight says it wasn’t meant as a representation of hate. The International Raelian Movement says the swastika is actually a symbol of peace and beauty that was corrupted by Nazis in 20th century Germany.

On its website, the group writes that the flight was part of its third swastika rehabilitation day.

Don Pripstein, president of the Jewish Community Center of Long Beach Island, says whatever the group’s intentions are, the image is still horrific for many Jews whose relatives were killed in the Holocaust.

Why not give it a try? Hammer & sickle became a fashion symbol even though Commies killed more people than Nazis. It’s all about good PR department. Deer are cute & despite causing numerous car accidents have many advocates. Ugly possums have no such powerful & vociferous friends, despite being less of a nuisance.

To be fair, I’ve always heard that about the symbol. You see it all over Hindu temples, etc…it’s much older than the Nazis. It was co-opted as part of the whole “Aryan master race” thing.

It’s a shame, but yeah, that symbol is forever tarnished in the west because of the Nazis and what they used it to stand for. I think this group is tilting at windmills. Also, they’re kooks, apart from this anyway.

Now, Patty, are you joking? They may be doing something stupid, but even if they meant something pro-Nazi with this effort, they shouldn’t be arrested. This is the U.S., freedom of speech and all that.

The guy might be right as to the original meaning of the swastika have been a symbol of peace; I can’t speak to that. But this is a clear case of where the original brand has been totally corrupted by what the Nazis did, represented by that symbol. There is simply no way in the world that it can ever be rehabilitated.

I have a large collection of turn-of-the-last-century graphics and many of them feature a swastika as a good luck symbol, long before the Nazis existed. The last Tsarina of Russia had the symbol on many things, including many of her diaries.

Unfortunately, you are correct that it is forever tarnished.

Patty, listen to your own words here.

You want someone who is practicing their 1st amendment rights (even if we don’t like them) arrested for it.

Arresting people because you don’t care what they are saying or why ISN’T AMERICA, it is Nazi Germany.

Disagree with them, but don’t arrest them for having a different opinion.

BTW: I agree, they are at the least insensitive if not outright offensive.

Yes, the swastika was a good luck sign, Buddhists use the backward one to designate their temples on maps in Japan and Indians in the US Southwest used it as a sign of the sun—-one U.S. infantry division in World War I even used it as a divisional insignia! But as another commenter said, the swastika has been tarnished, probably forever, and this asinine stunt in Jersey isn’t going to help!
