FREEDOM! This Is Incredible! US Catholic Church Rolls Out Major Offensive Against Obama’s Attacks on Religious Liberty

FREEDOM!
Obama declared war on religious freedom.
The Church is fighting back.

And it is beautiful.

For the first time in history the US Conference of Catholic Bishops has declared a Fortnight for Freedom in direct response to the attack on the Catholic Church and religious freedom by the Obama administration.  The US bishops are asking the faithful to pray, say the Rosary, fast, sacrifice, take action and attend rallies in support of religious freedom. The Fortnight began on the Feast of Saints John Fisher and Thomas More–July 22–and will continue through July 4th.

Most Reverend William E. Lori, Archbishop of Baltimore, fired the opening shots on Sunday. This homily was posted by the Baltimore Archbishop on the US Bishop’s website.

We surely are not facing the dire brutality that confronted St. John Fisher, but our Church and her institutions do find themselves today in perilous waters. For embedded in the HHS mandate is a very narrow governmental definition of what constitutes a church; and if it is not removed, it is likely to spread throughout federal law.

In the HHS mandate, the federal government now defines a church as a body which hires mostly its own members and serves mostly its own members, and which exists primarily to advance its own teachings. In a word, so long as a church confines itself to the sacristy, then it is exempt from having to fund and facilitate in its health insurance plans government mandated services which are contrary to its own teachings. But if a church steps beyond the narrow confines of this definition by hiring those of other faiths and by serving the common good – then the government is telling us that such institutions aren’t religious enough, that they don’t deserve an exemption from funding and facilitating those things which violate the very teachings which inspired churches to establish their institutions in the first place.

Friends, we must never allow the government, –any government, at any time, of any party–to impose such a constrictive definition on our beloved Church or any church! Our Church was sent forth by the Lord teach and baptize all the nations. It was commissioned by our Savior to announce that the Kingdom of God is at hand. It was sent into the world to do the corporal works of love and mercy. Don’t we see this all around us – in inner-city Catholic schools, in Catholic hospitals, in the work of Catholic Charities so critical for the well being of local communities? “The Word of God cannot be chained,” St. Paul wrote to Timothy, and now it is up to us to defend the Church’s freedom to fulfill her mission to freely manifest the love of God by organized works of education and charity. This is why the Church has engaged the Administration so earnestly, this is why we are working for legislative protection from the Congress, this is why, thankfully, so many have filed lawsuits in various parts of the country, and this is why there is a Fortnight for Freedom—so that the Church would be free of that government interference which St. John Fisher warned against in the British Parliament in the 16th century!…

…If freedom is a system based on courage and if the motive of democracy is love, then let us strive in God’s grace, throughout this Fortnight and beyond, to be men and women of courageous love for the glory of God, for the good of the Church and for love of country.

Never has the Catholic Church organized a campaign quite like the Fortnight for Freedom.
This is unprecedented for the Catholic Church.

Churches across the United States announced the offensive on Sunday.

Locally, at the the parish I belong to in St. Louis, they spoke about religious freedom for the homily. Then the entire congregation stood and read this prayer aloud for religious freedom.

(And this is by no means a conservative Catholic parish.)

The Diocese of St. Louis is asking the faithful to pray, say the Rosary, fast, sacrifice and attend rallies in support of religious freedom.
We’ve never seen anything like this.

Obama declared war.  He never expected this.

In the words of Joe Biden, “This is a big f-cking deal.”

More… Joe Blow added:

It shouldn’t be just the Catholics taking the stand against Obama’s attempt to stop religious freedom, it should be all Christians as well as Jews. I am afraid the American people do not understand how many of their freedoms are being done away with.

More… Granny Kate added:

I will not comply. Today, I am a Catholic. I am a Morman. I am a Jew. I am Spartacus. If we don’t hang together, we will surely hang separately.

Obama and his lapdog media claims he’s a Christian but like too many Democrats, his real faith is of Liberalism.

Thank God for Jeremiah Wright and his church. For without them, we would know even less about Obama and his past.

Even up here in hippy-dippy Kumbaya singing Maine this is getting a big huge push. The bishop has been talking about this non-stop since the mandate was announced. This upcoming 2 weeks might be the impetus to getting Catholics really thinking about their faith and what it means in their public lives.

  • squeaky

anything to help expose who the real obama is. when standing by your own personal beliefs is somehow racist and makes you an enemy of the state……..

  • Joe Blow

It shouldn’t be just the Catholics taking the stand against Obama’s attempt to stop religious freedom, it should be all Christians as well as Jews. I am afraid the American people do not understand how many of their freedoms are being done away with. Stupid, stupid people just too centered on their busy lives with reality TV and since they have thrown in the towel on morals and religious beliefs they can’t be bothered. Unfortunately all of us will suffer for their stupidity.

Hmmm… IS IT A COINCIDENCE that Obama has the military doing military street games in St. Louis, this month? I believe it is this week, now.

They never say “vote GOP this once”. Never say”don’t vote for Obama.”
Oh no. roman Catholics vote democrat. Period. so look for an EO or anothe device similar to that congressman durin Obama care vote , who got a worthless action that had an elapsed time on it.

Kabuki. Look at what is not being said. A con will be enacted and the cardinal will say “ok,we are square”…

After the Catholic Church worked with olamo to get obamacare, only AFTER being thrown under the bus, do they work for FREEDOM OF RELIGION! They were only too happy to enslave the American people as long as the Catholic Church had their waiver exception to obamacare.

Is the Catholic Church really working for Freedom of religion or just getting revenge for being lied to by obama?!

  • squeaky

“…just getting revenge for being lied to by obama?!” we can either pick up the ball and run with it or focus more on the who what or why of the catholic church. i don’t care where the fuse of thought is lit but if we can’t move beyond the catholic church to the wider field……

  • Thanks, Jim for reporting on St. Louis’s mobilization for the Fortnight for Freedom, which the bishops announced on April 12. The Fortnight began on the Feast of Saints John Fisher and Thomas More–July 22–and will continue through July 4th. It should become an annual event for all people of good will. Democracy is not a machine that can run by itself. It must be built on a firm cultural foundation rooted in the virtues of the people. When those virtues and the moral truths that shape them are banished from the public square, the foundations of the house of freedom are weakened. The remedy is for the people to educate themselves and work together to demand that the state respect their exercise of freedom of religion. If you live in the D.C. area, come to Patrick Henry College in Purcellville, Virginia on June 30, 1 – 5 p.m. for a citizens’ seminar on the First Amendment and democracy

  • GOP KICKS ASS

NO it’s not. I hate to be the Debbie Downer of your party, but Catholics put Obama in office and the same Catholics who supported him in 2008 will return to support him in 2012. THe Catholic Church is very divided. You have the old school Kennedy Democrats who won’t budge and the strong pro-lifers on the other side who won’t budge. This does nothing except put the Church between a rock and a hard spot. They need to get out of the insurance industry and end the health insurance for thousands and let the Obama ADM respond to that right before the election or shut down their hospitals and schools and organizations that are effected and put thousands out of jobs before the election. Any other move is a waste of time.

  • Mairin7

We are a Republic based on the Constitution. Democracy can only ever be as good as the people themselves…and since we have thrown off the yoke of Jesus, looked back…invited Satan into sup with us, in the unholy triune, anti-sacraments of abortion, homosexuality and pornography, we will now be punished. The Judge will pass sentence upon the Country, once so blessed by His Hand.
The Catholic Church, if two-thousand years of history may be brought into evidence, is never so moral, never so strong and fruitful…when she is being persecuted. We will see who is really Catholic and who is not, in the coming years, as we are rounded up. Regardless of who the Powers allow into office, they mean to have Lucifer rule. And we will see what becomes of that.

  • Make that June 22. Sorry to be picky.

I can guarantee you that this is EXACTLY what the Obama regime wants them to do. The Catholic Church owns a huge percentage of the medical facilities in the US and provides health care to about 40% of our citizens. Just how fast do you think it would take Obama to declare a “national emergency” and confiscate all those health care facilities if they did that?

I would almost be willing to bet money the order to do exactly that is already waiting in his desk drawer.

It really doesn’t matter at this point why the Church has grown some…and decided to take on Obama, it is a good thing for the future of the Church, all churches and the future of this country. So stop your complaining and whining about who put him ( Obama) in the White House and how Catholics always vote Dem ( which by the way is sort of crazy because “all” Catholics don’t vote DEM or Rep) It’s time to get out there and make sure he doesn’t get another term to “mess this country up.” If you are not registered to vote you had better go and find out where and how to do so in your community, do it toady or it will be too late. My guess is about 30% of Church goers are not even registered. Next Sunday look around in church about 1/3 of those, of voting age, can not vote because they are not registered……

In all the Catholic churches around NY and NJ the same message was offered.

In one parish the priest, who was NOT a native American but here from another country, shared how people ALL OVER THE WORLD want to come and live in America. . . to be free with liberty and justice in a land ruled by laws and not people. . . .

And how very special and blessed the UNITED STATES is because it has created a place where many can come – – – many of different faiths, cultures, backgrounds – – – to be one . . . united by the love of Liberty, Justice and God.

With God all things ARE POSSIBLE. . . and this land has been Blessed with abundance – – – in natural resources, in agricultural resources and in human resources – – – yet we also need to keep it abundant in Spiritual Resources of Love & Compassion as “One Nation UNDER GOD”.

Obama and his crew have awaken the passive giant of Catholics, Christians, Jews and others who believe . . . though their methods of belief may vary. . .

and GOD, who is slow to anger but quick in judgement, will make known HIS ways!

Obama miscalculated when he said, They bring a knife we bring a gun. . .
There is something even more powerful than a gun. . . that even a speeding bullet cannot stop. . . Faith and the Holy Spirit!!!!! And with these two come TRUTH like Sir Thomas More during the reign of Henry VIII.

Seek the Truth for the TRUTH shall set you free!!!

Catholics bring the Cross & Prayer – – – for the Holy Spirit to come and, with faith, make right the wrong. . . with Truth and Justice for all!

Report from Texas: Yes, we had a similar message at Mass on Sunday. In place of the homily, the priest led a long prayer, which I am assuming we will do again next week. Even my 9-year-old son said, “What was that all about?” It definitely got people’s attention, and that’s after the standing ovation my priest got for a homily right after the HHS mandate thing came down. I don’t know about everywhere, but here, people are focused on this.

… and they have voted religiously Democratic for a couple hundred years. They have done so mindlessly and in lock step. My wife know nuns who probably think they will go to hell if they ever vote Republican; yet all these years they have voted for the Party that supports abortion explicitly, and implicitly supports adultery and sodomy and all the other stuff thoroughly described in Romans 1:20-32.

The Catholic hierarchy is statist and has been ever since they got religious control of the Roman Empire. Before that they fully understood individual rights and strongly supported them. So now in this extremely late hour the Catholic hierarchy is finally concerned about Freedom of Religion? What about other individual rights? And what about individual responsibilities? The Roman Catholic Church probably says that they are for individual responsibilities, but philosophically that is at variance with their statist predilections. They should have a long time ago been thinking about the consequences of pushing their parishioners to vote blindly for Democrats, and of sucking up to the false idol Kennedys and other influential “Catholic” politicians.

I hope they figure out that they have a lot of responsibility for the mess our country is in all sorts of ways, not just imperiled Freedom of Religion.

    1. Acts of hostility toward people of Biblical faith:
    • April 2008 – Obama speaks disrespectfully of Christians, saying they “cling to guns or religion” and have an “antipathy to people who aren’t like them.” 1
    • February 2009 – Obama announces plans to revoke conscience protection for health workers who refuse to participate in medical activities that go against their beliefs, and fully implements the plan in February 2011. 2
    • April 2009 – When speaking at Georgetown University, Obama orders that a monogram symbolizing Jesus’ name be covered when he is making his speech. 3
    • May 2009 – Obama declines to host services for the National Prayer Day (a day established by federal law) at the White House. 4
    • April 2009 – In a deliberate act of disrespect, Obama nominated three pro-abortion ambassadors to the Vatican; of course, the pro-life Vatican rejected all three. 5

If we allow any President or any member of this government to mandate a law that is against their faith and traditions, what else can government then do?

If for that, others freedoms that we traditionally believe have been ours could be taken away. And it is important we all stand together and realize how serious and what consequences this will bring to ALL our freedoms.

This is inflicting the views of this administration on a Religious group of people. If government can regulate certain conduct within a Church, then they will take other steps to deny other groups their rights.

What people do in their personal lives is also a freedom and who is to say they can’t go out and purchase for a small price, contraception. But instead, HHS as mandate publicly that the Catholic Church commits a sin in their way of believing. They are forced to help their employees along with this. There is the real outrage they are feeling.

  • NowIsTheTime

NOW IS THE TIME! Call your local churches and offer to help to register voters after their services. Call your local Tea Party and offer to help them to register church voters. They will be glad of your help. Now is the time! Let’s act and take back this nation. The churches know: Jesus gave his all. With that same spirit, give your time and effort now in your state and get believers registered and to the polls in November.

I’m seeing a lot of anti-Catholic hissing behind these posts. Not surprising. But just keep in mind that if OZero gets his way, NO church will be allowed to perform acts of charity outside the church walls. That means you, too, Protestants and Jews and Muslims and Buddhists and Hindi and…

If Obamacare stands, the government will be preventing ALL of you from following the tenets of your faith that center on charity. And if your religion can’t perform charity, then what will happen to its instruments of charity, like hospitals and schools and shelters? With no charity outside church walls, then why should your religious group be tax-exempt? Do you see where this is going?

Perhaps in the end it will be The Catholic Church that saves the day for all of us. Today we are all Catholics.

  • Blacque Jacques Shellacque

    Color me unconvinced.

I have few doubts that if the Catholic Church manages to get out from under the requirements that its officials disagree with, they’ll go right back to supporting most leftist initiatives. There may be some deeper analysis than before, but it’ll all revolve around self-interest; if the church isn’t impacted, they won’t oppose it.

  • sandy

A couple of weeks ago a lot of us said — The Jews will always vote Democrat. Well Obama’s support among Jews has fallen to historic levels and so has his contributions. All people of religion are endangered by Obama’s stance on religious freedom. So lets stop being cynical and support those who want to keep our institutions intact.

This is not the time for religeous wars or the blame game, A lot of good Americans representing many faiths voted for this enemy of the Constitution and Freedom ( religeous and otherwise). This wolf deceived a lot of people but now we all have seen his teeth bared. It’s time to unite together to defeat this enemy who is trying to destroy our heritage. I think we can agree on that and work together to not only defeat his plans but also his re-election.

  • Harrington

What’s with all the martial talk? What “war”? And what “freedom”? Freedom from decent health care?

Henry VIII confiscating Church land, throwing nuns and monks out, telling Rome it had no authority in England, THAT was a government waging “war” (of a sort) on the Church.

This is nothing. This is a democratic government reminding religious institutions that they don’t have carte blanche when it comes to determining what coverage they will and won’t give people. It’s Catholic sharia, nothing more and the administration is merely trying to put some curbs on it, as any secular government should.

This won’t really hurt the president come November, because rational people, secular and religious, see this as an extremist move by an extremist wing of a large and extremely diverse church. It runs the gamut from Opus Dei to Nuns on the Bus.

Last week’s polling by the Wall Street Journal — http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702304441404577479042867140800.html — showed that Catholics *still* support Obama over Romney 48% to 44%. Except white Catholics. Because, well, you know…

If the Catholic Church is taking a stand on the health care law, this Lutheran will stand with them, and I can even pray this prayer of theirs, and recommend it to everyone. Why don’t we unite in this, and in registering voters, and attending the rallies, wherever they are.
What the Catholic Church has done before and might do in the future does not change the fact that this is the time to fight, while we have the strength. If we let the administration keep chipping away at our religious liberty, we’ll find ourselves too weak when the most important repressions come.

I’m so happy for all the people around the country announcing the participation of their diocese in Fortnight for Freedom. In the Springfield IL diocese there was a kick off mass on Friday but when I inquired as to what other activities would be taking place the reply was crickets! No mention at my church since the original letter from the bishops in the beginning of the year. Checked all parish bulletins in my area – no mention. The USCCB website has lots of information. EWTN has also been giving good coverage. My diocese was one joining in the lawsuit so I was very hopeful we would be more involved. To borrow a phrase – For the first time in my adult lifetime, I’m really proud of the Catholic Church. Also thanks JH for the article. I’m printing for my parents who had not heard anything was being done.

There is no doubt the day has arrived and we are in for the full blown attack on Christianity..
Also the media mounted pressure to remove all values of faith which have held civil society together for centuries is coming from powerful politically controlled sources. So how do we defend those values and fight to retain and/or reestablish sanity? If it is simply the election of public officials who share our values there is little hope.
Why? They have little chance of being elected in today’s political environment. Why? Because the media will literally crucify any candidate who tries to run on a platform that is associated with and/ or professes Christian religious values.
The d-evil is in the dictates and since we have willingly supported him taking control of public education and even invited him into our universities over a period of decades ignoring his progressive invasion and manipulation of Hollywood, television, the media and now with a majority of the population empty of most true Christian character, he can and does have the power to identify, define, and dictate for and to the general public what is of value and who is to be trusted with their lives and future.
We have lost our perception of individual souls as Gods children along with embracing our union with the one body of Christ. We have sacrificed our unique individuality now convinced it has little value if not part of the contrived and coveted commonality espoused by those controlling what we see, hear, read, and imagine which in turn connects us with the collective power of the majority community.
Consequently our hope and need is to be humble enough to get on our knees and call upon our heavenly father to come to our aid. He alone is able to stem the tide of evil which is sweeping our nation and indeed the world today. We have too long relied upon our own good intentions which are no match for the evil one when not combined with sincere efforts to openly acknowledge the glory and majesty of our God and his divine son our Lord and salvation in our daily lives. It is time for each of us to pray as if we were the tipping point of the battle for our country for if America is brought down there will never again be a nation capable of combating the tyrants of the world who seek to suppress and enslave people with godless government.

I’m glad that the rest of the country seems to be doing something. I asked people I know who go to two other RC churches in the Richmond, VA, diocese and like the one I attend — NOTHING. Not a word in the homily, not a prayer, not an insert in the bulletin. The liberal Catholic paper had one photo and caption on the back page of a rally, and that was it.

Two of the churches mentioned above cater to illegals, so they LURVES them some Obama cash. One of these parish priests is SO hostile to anything anti-Obama that when things like the healthcare contraception kerfuffle and the Fortnight come up he gets subs to say Mass for him.
